Acerca de esta escucha

He's arrogant. A certified pain in the butt. Maybe just crazy enough to survive.

Jack Atlas, self-proclaimed 'World's Best Assassin', had a simple plan: retire in style and marry the girl of his dreams. Then he gets placed in The Tower—a divine deathtrap where gods pit their creations against each other for the ultimate prize: eternal paradise for you and your friends. The catch? If you lose, well, let's just say your chances of finding a decent bar in oblivion are slim.

Jack, who’s never met a hornet’s nest he didn’t want to kick, soon finds himself on the wrong side of The Black Centipede, a notorious assassin cult with a charming recruitment policy: join or they’ll murder everyone he loves.

Instead of sipping Mai Tai’s on some beach he can’t pronounce; it’s slurping down health potions because he got stabbed by a goblin with a particular fondness for stabbing him in the rear. Heroic quests? Conquer The Tower, appease his assassin overlords, reunite with his dream girl? Nope. Jack instead gets sent to 'dungeon timeout' for bad behavior. That's fine by him.

If anyone’s crazy enough to not just survive, but win against The Tower, it’s Jack.

An interesting assassin team that gets pulled into the apocalyptic tower. Jack is in the middle of his assignation of his target and gets hit with a stiff penalty. However the penalty could be a blessing. Great start to the series. Looking forward to book 2.

An assassin with a softer side?

I liked this book a lot. I thought it had a lot of great humor and the story kept moving. I'm surprised it has such a low number of reviews, I think this is one of the better books in this genre. Jonathan McClain knocks this one out of the park. as always, he does a great job narrating. give it a shot. it's worth it.

I think this is a worthwhile buy

Interesting new take on the tower format, looking forward to seeing how the world expands. However I'm not sure I'll last long term if the MC keeps up the intentional stupidity act. You'll either love or hate Jack... I'm in the hate side. I'll admit he's well written and actually funny at times, but it's too much and messes with the tone of the book. I think the most unrealistic part of the book, including all of humanity being transported into a multidimensional tower, is that any woman would be able to stand Jack for more than 10 minutes, nevermind agree to marry him.

I'll buy book 2 and hope the author tamps down the absurd personality just a bit, since everything else is good

Good story, annoying MC, perfect narration

**** I received an ARC from Mountaindale Press ****

Story:
I love Jack as a character, he gives off Deadpool without superpowers and 4th wall break vibes. He is ruthless and still has a sense of self and a compassion for his friends. He is also a misanthropic drunk a la Hugh Laurie's "House".

The side characters all seem to have some "meat" to their backstory and there is more to dig into there. Definitely creates conflict and comradery.

The world is very, at least from what we see, "dark Sword Art Online" tower climbing isekai. We only see the first level of a many leveled dungeon, so it is hard to understand the world building that much.

Also, I have been walking around my house saying "centipedey centipedey centipedey" to my kids all weekend.

Performance:
John McClain seems like the perfect name for the narrator of this book. He gives the main character all of the smarmy confidence you would expect from an assassin. No notes.

Great First Entry for a LitRPG!

Stop yelling out your secrets, you’re former assassins. Tries a lil too hard to be a jerk.

I am 4 chapter in and have been chuckling the whole time I listened. The writing is legitimately funny, and I don’t laugh easily. Some would call me stoic, but I just don’t find a lot of stuff funny. But this story has been funny so far. 4 chapters in and already worth the credit.

Don’t listen to the haters

Great story but honestly Jack is a bit of a problem he is one of those MC that you either love or hate no in-between. on the summary it's says that he is crazy but what we get is mostly him being lazy arrogant and irresponsible. and the best. parts it's when he is serious. I will definitely give book two a chance with the way it ended and hopefully we see a more serious jack there

Good one

What a great beginning to a awesome new litRPG series. The system takes effect over earth just as Jack the titular character is about to finish his last job, his final assassination. When he along everyone else on earth was transported to the Tower. Jack had invisoned going straight and retiring with the money he'd saved and living the good life with his girlfriend Sarah. But all that changed when the system came giving Sarah a front row view of Jack's final kill and she learned what Jack truly was. Jack was quickly whisked away from the safe zone and sent to a cursed dungeon for punishment. And Ohhhh gods I need the Next Book, I might even go crazy wondering what's gonna happen next 🤔!!!
So yeah grab the book to find out what happens to Jack... Jonathan McClain is a great narrator. So get the audiobook because oh boy does Jonathan McClain have an action-driven story to tell you!!!

Here's a couple of quotes that amused me:

"He had changed hairstyles, now sporting dreadlocks, which he tied back into a tail, as his former afro had proved too hard to maintain when you had to wash monster out of your hair after every battle."

"His speed was beginning to write checks that his Endurance was having trouble cashing."

Ohhhh gods what a great start to a new litRPG series. I loved Jack. I need more!
