About this listen

Opposites attract and sparks fly when the vivacious Arabella falls for a baron who lives under the shadow of a scandalous family secret.

1815, London.

Arabella Latham is a free spirit who longs to feel the spark of true love, but few men can match her passion for Shakespeare or her zest for life. Though her prospects seem slim, Arabella knows she can always count on the handsome but stoic Lord Henry Northcott, dubbed “The Brooding Baron” by the ton, to be willing to engage in intelligent conversation and even share a congenial dance with her at almost every ball. His quiet demeanor is the opposite of her vivacious personality, and she finds herself drawn to him, despite their differences.

Lord Northcott has quietly admired Arabella for years, grateful that his friendship with her brother has allowed him to share in her company and even begin to secretly imagine a life together with her. But he knows he cannot pursue a romantic relationship with any woman—let alone someone as bright and beautiful as Arabella—because of the shadow that an old family scandal has cast over his life. He has vowed to preserve what is left of his family’s reputation by holding himself above reproach apart from society and focusing the majority of his efforts at Parliament.

But Arabella is determined to show Lord Northcott that life is meant to be enjoyed, and she sets out to see what is behind the walls the Brooding Baron has built around himself. Could the spark of true love be enough to drive away the shadows holding Henry back?

This book was even better then I expected. I hope the series continues and we hear more about some of the other hinted at story lines.

Lovely story, great performance

I usually prefer much more spice, but Gentry did a great job with building tension and the story was fantastic. The supporting characters were as amazing and three dimensional as the FMC and MMC. Mary Jane Wells was stellar, as usual. Overall, great job!

Something Different

I really enjoyed how Henry‘s character was developed. This story shine of light on a dark page in the history of mental health in early England and the world for that matter. I really appreciated how it was brought to light in a compassionate, comical, but tasteful way that gave the reader a glimpse Into how far we’ve come as a community with caring for those with mental challenges. I would’ve loved to have seen more character development from Sarah and Henry story as a forged their new bond together. Though Henry showed great compassion and concern for Sara plate matched with the understandable helplessness to make a difference, I felt in the end that I wished he could have been more proactive and helping his sister. The contrast between his desire to save Arabella and his sister was uncomfortable. Still, it was an amazing story.

I also loved how much complexity was brought to Mr.Branbury‘s character. Not only was he humorous, but also perceptive,
persistent, compassionate and loyal. I hope we get to see him fall in love as I’m sure it will be an amazing story as well.

Great narrator, unusual storyline

Superb narrator and delightful heroine in an unusual storyline that revolves around rumors of mental illness and murder in the hero's family. Hero's best friend adds humor, and brief Shakespeare quotes by the cheerful, adventurous, heroine help balance the serious subject matter.

Cute… but unfinished

This was a wonderful book! I enjoyed the story and romance between the two main characters. There were a lot of questions left unanswered… so I am guessing they will be answered in future books. I would have loved an ending that had a little justice in there but I am hoping to see that in future books.

The narrator did a great job. My only problem is there are several loud snort noises where she is sniffing… kind of gross. I listen with headphones so it picks up everything. But other than that, amazing!

Wonderful!

Well written. Extraordinarily narrated. I'm new to Ms. Flint, and I can't wait for her next book. On my scale, Julia Quinn is a three, for reference. Laura Kinsale is usually a five. This book is a solid 4.4. Sweet and intimate and attention is paid to detail, which I appreciate in my HR. The characters are well drawn, like real people, which is, judging by the material out there, harder than we might think. Very good, Ms. Flint, very good!
