Katarina Ashowan was not made for courtly life. Sure, her father is the famous house witch of Daxaria so she was raised among majestic castles, proper manners, and royal expectations. But Kat is also a mutated witch whose power aligns predominantly with fire. She’s more comfortable riding horses or learning to fight than she is making polite conversation and wearing fancy dresses. Which is why her upcoming assignment—serving her best friend, Alina, the soon-to-be crowned Troivackian queen—is anything but ideal.

Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? If only. Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. Miss Mildred Percy is a spinster. She does not dance, she has long stopped dreaming, and she certainly does not have adventures. That is, until her great uncle has the audacity to leave her an inheritance, one that includes a dragon’s egg. The egg—as eggs are wont to do—decides to hatch, and Miss Mildred Percy is suddenly thrust out of the role of “spinster and general wallflower” and into the unprecedented position of “spinster and keeper of dragons.” But England has not seen a dragon since…well, ever.

Story
1647: A small group of Parliamentarian soldiers are ambushed in an isolated part of Northern England. Their only hope for survival is to flee into the nearby Moresby Wood...unwise though that may seem. For Moresby Wood is known to be an unnatural place, the realm of witchcraft and shadows, where the devil is said to go walking by moonlight. Seventeen men enter the wood. Only two are ever seen again, and the stories they tell of what happened make no sense. Stories of shifting landscapes, of trees that appear and disappear at will...and of something else.

Story
There is no magic on Prospect Hill—or anywhere else, for that matter. But just on the other side of the veil is the world of the Fae. Generations ago, the first farmers on Prospect Hill learned to bargain small trades to make their lives a little easier. Much of that old wisdom was lost as the riverboats gave way to the rail lines and the farmers took work at mills and factories. Alaine Fairborn’s family, however, was always superstitious, and she still hums the rhymes to find a lost shoe and to ensure dry weather on her sister’s wedding day.

Publisher's summary
The Sunday Times number four best seller.
Within the boroughs of London, nestled among its streets, hides another city, filled with magic.
Magic and love. Love and magic. They destroy everything in the end....
Anna’s aunt has always warned her of the dangers of magic. Its twists. Its knots. Its deadly consequences.
Now Anna counts down the days to the ceremony that will bind her magic forever.
Until she meets Effie and Attis.
They open her eyes to a London she never knew existed. A shop that sells memories. A secret library where the librarian feeds off words. A club where revellers lose themselves in a haze of spells.
But as she is swept deeper into this world, Anna begins to wonder if her aunt was right all along.
Is her magic a gift...or a curse?
Critic reviews
"An enthralling and original fantasy, woven inside a magical web of lies." (Jay Kristoff, Sunday Times best-selling author of Nevernight and Empire of the Vampire)
"The magic both gleams and threatens. There are riddles and puzzles to be solved and there’s a library - trust me, it’s a good one. You’ll want to give this a try." (Sunday Times best-selling author Robin Hobb)
"A bewitching tale of magic, family secrets and twisted affections, of finding your true self in a world of treacherous mystery. Prepare to be charmed!" (David Wragg, author of The Black Hawks)

Raised by a vampire in a secret society of witches, shifters, and elves, Charlotte finds that she is the freak in her world of magic and wonder. When she stands before an army of impossible obstacles, the likelihood of survival in this coming-of-age modern fairy tale is slim, resulting in a war between light and darkness. In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Story
Some stories take more than one lifetime to tell. There are wrongs that echo through the ages, friendships that outpace the claws of death, loves that leave their mark on civilization, and promises that nothing can break. This is one such story. Annelid and Leveret met as children in the middle of the Sri Lankan civil war. They found each other in a torn-up nation, peering through propaganda to grasp a deeper truth. And in a demon-haunted wood, another act of violence linked them and propelled their souls on a journey throughout the ages.

Which is why her upcoming assignment—serving her best friend, Alina, the soon-to-be crowned Troivackian queen—is anything but ideal.

loved it! Harry potter for a mature audience
I will admit at first I was a little sceptical it was just another YA magic book that would be predictable. it almost convinces you that it is until everything flips on you and you realise all these tiny detailed weaved into the story lead to plot twist after plot twist. I won't say anything more to spoil it but this story is far from predictable (I'm my opinion at least). the only think I will say is it need a big bold trigger warning as it deals with many mature and difficult topics that may be uncomfortable for people expecting an innocent story about 16 year olds. they did feel a bit young to be dealing with the issues they did but I think its probably sadly a reflection of the stolen childhoods that some 16 yours old don't get. overall this story was wonderful, I was lost in it time and time again, it gave me the same sensation as reading Harry potter for the first time as a child. loved it! now to try wait for what's next in the story!

Everyone is toxic
Everyone in this book is either an abusive and manipulative, or a willfully naive doormat. I kept expecting it to get better, but only got worse till the very end. Made me feel depressed and yucky and like love isn't real. Any kind of love. All fake.
If you enjoy that kind of thing, you'll love this book. It was very well written and suspenseful, and the narrator did a wonderful job.
I just found myself rolling my eyes at the main character and all she was putting up with in the name of love. I'm sorry, but no. People who love you don't do things like this. I don't care who they are.

Wonderful with reservations.
The downside for me was the juvenile interactions especially surrounding the high school. The book should have been classified as a YA novel. There is nothing wrong with that, I just prefer to know what I am getting involved with. Anna's restraint was less than believable, though it was one way to move the story towards its conclusion. All that said, Aunt was the best villainous character I have come across in ages. There were some minor characters that I wish had played more of a part such as Rowan's mother and Nana Yaganov. Bea Holland was a fantastic narrator.

Three times longer than it needs to be
This really should carry a YA rating: this lengthy book doesn’t hold up well under scrutiny: the characters are not believable, and although we get pages upon pages of unnecessary dialogue and explanation, there is scant evidence for the interior motives of any of the characters. It reminds me of a soap opera: you can stop watching for years and pick back up right where you left off because the plot is so slow and labyrinthine. I really struggled to finish this; quite the opposite of an addictive read.
