About this listen

Bridgerton meets 10 Things I Hate About You in this spicy enemies-to-lovers Regency romance from a "must-read author" (Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author).

Lady Evangeline Raine prefers animals to people and has no interest in marriage—much to the dismay of her flirty younger sister, Viola. Because their father has one rule: Viola may be courted, only if Effie has a suitor as well.

Saddled with debt, Gage Croft, Duke of Vale, is determined to rebuild his estates. When the owner of his vowels offers him a fortune to charm the impervious Lady Evangeline for the season so Lady Viola can be courted, the game is on, even if it means pretending to seduce an unconventional wallflower.

But Gage gets much more than he bargains for in an adversary who wants to make her own scandalous arrangement. Effie will go to London for the season, but only if Gage agrees to be her lover. Yet when their fake courtship leads to passionate feelings, will their indecent proposal end with the season or be the start of something real?

Fun and sexy

Characters were lovely and the banter delicious. Chemistry sears every page. Hoping we get Briar and Lushing next. And could Mary Jane Wells read everything.

Well written and well narrated

Thank goodness Ms Howard engaged Mary Jane to narrate. I enjoy her writing but can't get through her other books due to poor narration. It's is audible after all and readers deserve a talented narrator. And NO i'm never buying a 'Virtual' narrated book.

Good story, fun, laugh out loud and there's heat, lots of heat. This one went into my read again file.

So entertaining!

I found this book by searching for novels read by Mary Jane Wells. I had never heard of Amalie Howard but a positive review by Lisa Kleypas cinched it. I’m a huge fan of Kleypas and Tessa Dare and having read all of their books ( multiple times) I’m so glad to have found a kindred spirit!

My favorite

Love this one so much! Characters were funny and the chemistry between the two main characters was perfect. I especially love the fact that they both supported each other’s wants and knew the importance of friends and family. My favorite of all the series so far!

Long-winded

Kind of dragged on and would have benefitted from some parts being cut to tighten the story. The narrator is generally good, but I didn’t like the voice of the female lead: Her voice is a bit high-pitched and sounds somewhat childlike, which I find off-putting. Also, I think the deception of the male lead was rather easily accepted.

Totally unbelievable

This author just takes too many liberties with reality in order to make it acceptable to modern readers. Why bother to write an historical romance that has nothing to do with history.
