About this listen

Allison Lopez is not your everyday Psychic Hotline operator. She's a real psychic with real abilities that seem to grow daily, thanks to her close association with an immortal friend. Now, as her abilities continue to grow, Allison meets a very strange woman who reveals a starling secret to her. Life, for Allison Lopez, is about to get even stranger... and more fantastic.

And when she gets a phone call from a distraught father seeking answers to his daughter's murder, Allison finds herself in unfamiliar territory: looking for a cold-blooded killer. It will take all of Allison's abilities, both old and new, to catch an animal who preys on the innocent. And as the case unfolds, Allison is about to discover that not all is as it seems and life still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

The Witch and the Gentleman is the first of a brand-new, supernatural series.

Dawn's Review of The Witch And The Gentleman

I'm not in love with the book. I thought that the concept was good. I think that the narrator kind of ruined it for me. Her pace was too slow for the story. I ended up changing the speed of the story so that I didn't get bored. With that being said......

I liked the concept of the story. Psychic Hotline person actually having psychic ability. Helping a guy find the killer of his daughter and find his way home. It was predictable, but entertaining.

A fresh take on witches and psychics with plenty of twists

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel in the Witches series. The lead character is a true psychic who also happens to be a witch. Rather than a large shallow cast, there is a small core of characters who are each unique and well fleshed-out. The lead character's narration was extremely natural and believable.

The audiobook version of this novel is terrific. The vocal talents of Ms. Townes were the perfect compliment to this tale. After listening to her spot on interpretation of each character's voice, I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than she did. This was the first audiobook that I've listen to that was narrated by Ms. Townes. I will certainly look forward to listening to as much of her work as I can get my hands on. I especially look forward to listening to further novels in this wonderful series!

JR Rain never disappoints

I loved this story about Allison. This gives you info about her “witchy” powers. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in this series.

Enjoyable story

Enjoyable story but I can't help seeing it too closely related to another very well known story (and movie) with the exception of the witch element. Won't say which movie so as to not spoil this read for others. Even with that comparison, I did rather enjoy this. Characters are developed well and story is engaging, plus the narrator does a good job also.

Power, compassion and a twist, what's not to like?

Where does The Witch and the Gentleman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Well, it takes a fair bit these days to get 5 stars out of me, but I've loved so many audio books and found so many new authors it's hard to answer this. But, when I have credits J.R. Rain is one of the top 5 authors who I search for to find new books they've written.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This book grabbed me, I've been listening to all the Samantha Moon books and loved Allison in those, this book made me love her more. There were times I laughed, and times I cried (sorry fellow bus passengers, I'm fine/sane, I promise) but the best part was the very end, loved it!

Any additional comments?

Worth a credit or just buying it, especially if you've been following the Samantha Moon books.

Not my favorite

The narrator read too slowly and a little too earnestly in my opinion. The plot twist is really no surprise. This is the first book in the series, which could get better with some real suspense, some secondary characters, and better narration. I wouldn't recommend.

Unusual world and lovable main character

Super fun story, with terrific narrator. On the short side, but if you like modern witches and a mix of comedy and drama, definitely worth a listen. I'm glad to have it and hope that there's another audiobook in the series soon. And that there's more about Allison and Conn, hint hint, Mr. Rain!

Pretty good time waster

What made the experience of listening to The Witch and the Gentleman the most enjoyable?

The story was light fun.

Did Francesca Townes do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I wasn't in love with the narration but it was okay.

Any additional comments?

At times the story seemed a little jumpy in pacing and with the story line. A chapter would end and a new one begin without any obvious continuity.

Exhausting to listen to

Would you try another book from J.R. Rain and/or Francesca Townes?

I like J.R. Rain. I have a lot of his books. I won't buy another audiobook in which Townes does the narration. The work doesn't flow, everything is said as if the sentence has an exclamation mark at the end and her reading doesn't match the character of the protagonist. This is NOT an enjoyable listen. I have the ebook and will go back to reading. Ugh.

Would you be willing to try another book from J.R. Rain? Why or why not?

I like All the Samantha Moon books. They're fun to read.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Francesca Townes?

The lady who does Andrew and Ilona Gordon's books would have been great.

Was The Witch and the Gentleman worth the listening time?

Absolutely not. I didn't finish listening. Ugh.
