Publisher's summary

The White Company is a motley group of English mercenaries, fighting under the leadership of Sir Nigel Loring. Bound by an unquestioning respect for social order, patriotism and a lust for adventure, the company makes its way to France to fight in the local wars. With assiduous attention to historical detail, Conan Doyle paints a convincing picture of the chivalric life and manners of the 14th century. With a fresh, concise style, this is a robust and stirring tale of adventure with the spirit and humorous touch of a Chaucerian raconteur.

An old favorite.

Good narrator, enjoyable old story that doesn't get enough exposure compared to his other works.

Sir Nigel lisps?

Any additional comments?

To be fair I listened to this immediately after listening to Sir Nigel read by Stephen Thorne. I was a little perplexed by this narrator's decision to make our hero a lisping fool. The image I had in my head from the prevois book jarred with the image conjured by this narrator. This narrator made Sir Nigel sound kind of like the Old King from the Princess Bride. Otherwise, the reading was excellent.

Knightly deeds and noble steeds abound!

Ma foie! By my ten finger bones, from Hampshire to Navarre and back again, ye will not find a fairer tale of chivalry, plight, daring, et l'amour!

Narration is distracting

It’s hard to understand the narrator sometimes, when he’s doing accents and changing voices to represent characters. Especially when he does his nasally accent... Becomes almost unintelligible at times, though its OK most of the time. Also, more than once I’ve found that his narration gets in the way of the story; a good narration adds to the story, instead of taking away. His voice for Nigel is borderline annoying... I get that he is old by this time and has a lisp, but I can’t take Nigel the character seriously because of the voice that the narrator takes with him.

a most worthy telling of knights brave and bold

One of the most excellent narrations I have heard on Audible. Nick Rawlinson flawlessly switches between accents, genders and inflection that brings each character to life. what a grand tale it is too. it deserves no better than a masterful delivery and this did not dissapoint.
