He was a man, who, by his own definition, limited his concentration to no more than eight seconds at a time - the time required to ride a bull or saddlebronc and win. He’s tough, independent, shallow, and always looking for a good time. Then his father is murdered. Sheriff Robert Trent, was the longtime chief law enforcement officer of Lodge Pole County Montana. He was stern, fair, honest, and dependable.

After the stunning historical novels The Clearing and The Missing, Tim Gautreaux now ranges freely through contemporary life with 12 new stories and eight from previous collections. Most are set in his beloved Louisiana, many hard by or on the Mississippi River, others in North Carolina, and even in midwinter Minnesota. But generally it's heat, humidity, and bugs that beset his people as they wrestle with affairs of the heart, matters of faith, and the pros and cons of tight-knit communities.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Tells more than a story...
The author uses historical (Vietnam era) circumstance to shed light on the continuous assualt on native culture; in a manner that affords an opportunity to heal via raised awareness.

Good Story...something doesn't feel right
Author has exceptional talent...but his relationship is a male pipedream. Relationships evolve. The good ones make your life worse for awhile. The most exciting this relationship gets is when she claims to foresee the future and calls him 'hot shot.' Who is Gemma? What does Nick bring to the relationship...baggage...he`s been through hell but no relationship baggage...no 'things` to work through?
That said Dwight Holing`s skill at description, especially descriptive action is second to none. I am not only on the Spitfire traveling 130mph across the flat...I AM driving it...burning through the curves in the black of night...I hear the engine scream! Considering that I`m 72 and just had hip surgery...well done! Very well done!
Story...very good. With the exception of the relationship thing. Try this...Gemma gets killed. I could never get a feel for who she was anyway, so, you can make this happen...Pudge and November are naturally devastated. Everyone is supportive until Nick brings Santa Fe Sally home from a Game Warden's convention ...she has long legs and she loves the shack...so they get married and begin to learn about each other. Sally, a budding writer is determined to interview November about Native Ceremonies and copy some beadwork designs for her up coming best seller. There is baggage...

Captivating
Book four in the "Nick Drake" series continues to entertain. The wildlife ranger continues his quest to help those in need. His PTSD is getting better, and he is letting a woman into his life. His ties with the Paiute Indian Tribe continue to grow. Harney county is dry and on fire, and Drake helps solve who is responsible. I find this series to be both relaxing and engaging. Charles Leggett's narration continues to be excellent. Dwight Holing's writing is superb.

a very good story in the series
The author really works hard to give some good indigenous insights to the area he's writing about and some of the key issues that face indigenous people. he tries to honor the indigenous culture language while telling an interesting story. Of course reoccurring characters give us that special attachment that a lot of us who read and listen to books a lot enjoy. of course he gives some wonderful insights to a part of the world that not a lot of people understand. In addition he gives some knowledge and education to people who might have suffered from PSD no matter what war they were in.
