About this listen

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who'll accept her - an enigmatic and mysterious man from America, a man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he's ill. Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won't tell India why any old one won't do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London's best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she's certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she'll find herself unemployed and homeless again - and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life. With a cast of quirky characters, an intriguing mystery, and a dash of romance, The Watchmaker's Daughter is the start of a thrilling new historical fantasy series from the author of the best-selling Ministry of Curiosities, Freak House, and the Emily Chambers Spirit Medium books.

Great Start to an addictive Series

Would you listen to The Watchmaker's Daughter again? Why?

Yes, this was a great listen, the narrator did a superb job with all the voices and accents.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I truly never considered the art of watchmaking all that fascinating. However, this book incorporated history, craftsmanship and enough mystery to keep you guessing.

What about Emma Powell’s performance did you like?

The author left a little bit too much of a cliff hanger for me. I have quite a few unanswered questions that I feel could have been acknowledged prior to the conclusion, rather than waiting for the following installment.

If you could rename The Watchmaker's Daughter, what would you call it?

Nothing, it was great!

Steampunk at its best

No vampires. No fullblown automatrons or out of control magic. No ridiculous blown out of proportion sexual desires.

Just almost real life with a touch of magic. A slowly developing love between two people.

I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Good beginning to series

I enjoyed the time period; the characters, their development, the story and the infusion of magic. The ending was rather abrupt. I hope to see these characters return.

Refreshing

The narrator did a very good job with the different characters’ voices. Atmosphere of the time period a fair attempt.
Looking forward to the other books in the series.

A Captivating Novel

The story, while a little thin in spots, and a bit heavy with Victoriana, kept me interested throughout. I look forward to the next one

Wonderful

Narrator did a great job bringing to life two complex characters- one male and one female. Their interaction is sublime. Premise of story is just fascinating. Enjoy!

Excellent

Great start to a great series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a who-done-it book, and with the extra spin of being London in 1905.

Suspend Disbelief & Allow the Plot to Unwind

Any additional comments?

The female character was intriguing combination of tenacity, competence, gullibility & innocence. The story is a bit predictable once magic is interjected, but the characters are odd & sympathetic enough that I willing hitched a ride.

Skilled Watchmaker and Mysterious American

India is the daughter of a watchmaker who studied with her father and learned to repair and build watches. When it was clear the guild wouldn't allow her membership so that she could legally sell watches, her father willed his shop to her fiancé. As soon as her father is buried, the fiancé breaks off the engagement and takes the shop for himself.

This leaves India unemployed and homeless. Matthew Glass, an American, is in London searching for a particular watchmaker to repair his watch and hires India to show him where all the watch shops are in London. As India spends more time with Mr Glass and his bizarre group of friends and family, she begins to unravel his secret. I don't want to give any of the surprises away so I'm going to keep my review vague.

I enjoyed the story and following India as she unravels the mystery around her. I would enjoy continuing the story to see what India and Matthew are up to. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I also enjoyed the narration of the story and would listen to this narrator again.
