About this listen

The Warmest December is the incredibly moving story of one Brooklyn family and the alcoholism that determined years of their lives. Narrated by Kenzie Lowe, a young woman reminiscent of Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John, as she visits her dying father and finds that choices she once thought beyond her control are very much hers to make.

Bernice L. McFadden is the author of seven critically acclaimed novels.

Critic reviews

"McFadden's reissued second novel takes an unflinching look at the corrosive nature of alcoholism.... This is not a story of easy redemption.... McFadden writes candidly about the treacherous hold of addiction." (Publishers Weekly)

"Riveting.... So nicely avoids the sentimentality that swirls around the subject matter. I am as impressed by its structural strength as by the searing and expertly imagined scenes." (Toni Morrison, author of Beloved)

"The sharpness of the prose and power of the story make it hard to stop reading even the most brutal scenes.... The story feels real perhaps because it’s familiar.... Or maybe, as Frey points out, the story is too vivid to be read purely as fiction. But in this Precious-style novel, genre is the least of our concerns." (Bust Magazine)

Interesting

The psychology of humans is always of interest to me… How the mine moves/works; have them mind can reveal paradigm shifts, is what this story does for the reader…

Excellent and healing read!

Very insightful look into the many facets of a troubled life and how difficult and healing the journey is to overcoming generational curses that plague so many families.

Pretty good

It was a good read with real life dramas. I enjoyed the story overall, though.

Good read

Good book…I enjoyed it. Unbelievable trauma through this book. I kept thinking…”Will this trauma ever end?” Not a lot of resolve although many of the incidents are quite believable… I had some difficulty following from past to present…still worth the read…

Bernice McFadden

I first read Sugar, my Bernice and got hooked. I read Nowhere is A Place and now this, all back to back. I love her storytelling. I'm still in love with some of the characters.

I love all of Bernice L. Mc Fadden’s books. I love the narrator Myra Lucretia Taylor, she did an excellent job. This story is hard and raw. Addiction in generations is a hard thing. McFadden’s beautiful prose tells a horrific story.
