Surprised me and pulled me in against my will.

I was looking for more of a contemporary, post-apocalyptic fantasy book when I came across this novel. The synopsis was very intriguing and the narration in the sample wasn't bad, so I picked it up despite it not being what I was looking for. I expected to not make it very far in, as I tend to give up on books quickly if the first chapter can't hold my attention. I thought the demons would feel hokey and put me off to the rest of the story. Surprisingly, I found myself unable to put it down. The characters and world are well-detailed and quite engrossing. The narration is good as well. I liked it so much that once I was done with it instantly had to pick up the sequel, The Desert Spear.

Top notch

This was a great story, definitely worth the credits and time.

Warning - though not central to the plot line in any fashion, there are a few hard-core adult situations which would be uncomfortable to listen to with company. Best skip this one if it's for a car ride with the wife.

There is a time to fight and it is here.

This is the best book that I have read in 2017! It has an original plot; the prose of the novel is smooth and transparent, and the character are well developed. This fantasy world is a medieval society from post-apocalyptic ruins. Magic is limited, and it is interspersed with a half-forgotten mixture of science and art.

For hundreds of years people have been hiding away from demons, corelings. The pendulum is now at the disadvantage for humans. Every night different corelings: wood, rock, sand, wind, or fire, come forth from the depths of the earth to terrorize humans. Their only protection is to hide behind the wards from their forgotten history.

Society has embrace the “flight” response to their life-threatening situation. Each battle with the corelings do not bring them any closer to finding a way to eliminate the threat. Their desire to “fight”, has been tempered with the fallacy of waiting for the prophesied Deliverer. They ward their homes, cities, and camps instead of seeking a solution

The Karasin, are desert people. They have a warrior society. Despite insurmountable loss of lives, they fight the corelings. They believe the Deliverer will come from their race, which inspires then to train and fight
.
The story is told from the point of view of three children: Rojer, a crippled Jongleur; Leesha, a healer whose beauty has brought her only tragedy; and Arlen, seeker after the forgotten ward magic. They defied the circumstances which would have destroyed their psyche and used it to survive. Their personal success is their inspiration to change their world.

Peter V. Brett, the author, introduces us to each child illustrating their small piece of their happiness. He then throws us into their “fight or flight” situation. They choose to fight. Through their struggles they acquire the confidence and skills to change the world. Their join forces to save a town and a share desire to save the world.

The experiences of Arlen and Rojer were so visceral it brought me to tears. I could not put the book down. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger for each character.

TERRIBLE RECORDING QUALITY

Warning - this audiobook sounds like it was recorded in the back seat of a moving van. I can't comment on the content as I could barely understand the narration. Good thing for Audible's return policy. Bummer though, the book's description on Audible and its Goodreads reviews all sounded great.

I liked it

The story started out slow for me but it soon had me listening at every opportunity. I didn't think I would like it but it was worth the credit.

story is great, but the audio has holes

loved the story, hated how there are sudden silences where small, brief parts of story are missing.

Amazing world idea

Unfortunately audio is quieter than other average books. Can’t get it loud enough if you listen with other noises around.

Extremely captivating

I was stuck for days listening to this when ever I could. My girl friend who got me started on this book started to get jealous even. The writing style is clear and leaves little to guess on the actions of the main characters. Beautiful story in total.

Way better than expected

I wasn't sure about this one, but picked it up on sale and I'm very glad I did. the story is excellent, and the narration is decent, however there are strange gaps in the narration that were a bit irritating.
