A Good Series: Storyville, French Quarter, N.O.

What made the experience of listening to The Voodoo Detective the most enjoyable?

I have listened to at least four audio books in the Detective Byone Series. I enjoy the New Orleans settings Treme, Storyville, the Quarter. Another aspect is the characters who populate the novels and how real they seem and how complex they are. The cultures and diversity. These are strongly represented in The Voodoo Detective specifically.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Voodoo Detective?

The confrontation and chase through the abandon building. The initial investigation.

What does Nicholas Patrella bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Though I'm no expert, my opinion is that Nicholas handles the French pronunciations and dialects very well. He has a clear neutral voice but can add dramatic elements appropriately.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

If you can't do the time,... Voodoo you think you're foolin?

Any additional comments?

Of the handful in the series, so far, that I've heard, this one, "The Voodoo Detective" is my favorite.

Thank you for the chance to listen to and review it.

The Voodoo Detective is back

After defeating his brother the Voodoo detective is back on the case of a missing person. A number of staged murder scenes leads Mose and Armond into the dark world of Voodoo magic. A good story that moves at a good pace with some nice twists.

Well read by Nicholas Patrella who brings the story to life and delivers an enjoyable listen.

Another "not so good"

Would you try another book from Ricardo M. Fleshman and/or Nicholas Patrella?

I had started reading from the 3rd book of this series and so far I've read 3rd, 4th, 5th and this 6th book. I had loved the 3rd and 4th book and the 5th book was disappointing. Sadly, this 6th book is also a bit of a disappointment. Looks like the 3rd and 4th book have set such high expectations in my mind that the other books of the series aren't meeting it. I still have hope though, that Ricardo will write something as fabulous some day. So, I will definitely try other books from him.

Has The Voodoo Detective turned you off from other books in this genre?

Canned response - "No. No one book can ever turn off a reader from an entire genre."

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Nicholas Patrella's performance is always good in this series. All 4 books I've listened to have been equally good, where audio performance is concerned.

Could you see The Voodoo Detective being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes, the Detective Byone Novels can be turned into a "mystery of the week" tv series.

Excellent writing style.

This was my first experience with Fleshman and the Detective Byone series. I found Fleshman's writing to be smooth, direct, and descriptive. The plot moved forward at an excellent pace without diverting from the central plot for very long.

Nicholas Patrella did a great job narrating. His French was very good, but I don't know any French so I can't say if it was authentic. It sounded like it, which is half the struggle.

I'm hooked!

The Voodoo Detective, Book 6 of the Detective Byone novels, by Ricardo M. Fleshman, narrated by Nicholas Patrella had me completely hooked. I have friends who live in New Orleans, and although I’ve not yet been able to visit them, their stories of the historic city with a culture so different from my own here in the upper Midwest, intrigue me – as does this book.

I enjoyed the fact that The Voodoo Detective is set in the 70’s, in a time before the instantaneousness of cell phones and the internet. I enjoyed the fact that many of the primary characters are mature adults, rather than college-aged know-it-alls. And, I enjoyed the dips into voodoo and the dark arts. I realize that, since I have not read (or listened to) the first 5 books in the series, I am missing out on a lot of the characters’ history, and I am going to correct that situation as soon as I can. I will definitely be listening to (or reading) the rest of this series.

Nicholas Patrella did a fine job narrating. Not having any experience with the French language, I know I would have a difficult time trying to figure out how to pronounce many of the street names and points of interest in New Orleans, but from what I can tell, Mr. Patrella made them sound like they were right. I was kind of expecting more of an accent that would fit in with the Cajun or French of the city, but really the only time that came out was in Lisette’s speech. Still, I suppose the lack of a stronger accent would make it more understandable for most people, so I guess it makes sense not to have it. I would listen to more of Mr. Patrella’s work.

Short & Worth The Listen!

This story was a rare find in that it was short but complete, not lacking in any area at all. I was engaged from start to finish. This is a must read for all thriller fans. Nicholas Patrella did a good job as narrator with easy to understand and distinguishable character voices. I look forward to more from this Author and narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
