About this listen

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single vampire in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a mortal snack.

Ruling by fear and fang, vampires walk among us.

Fed up living under the oppression of monsters, Clara kills a vampire to rid the world of at least one of the beasts. But when her father’s gambling debts rage out of control and put her sister in harm’s way, she offers herself up to pay the debt.

Thrust into a world of darkness and chaos, Clara does what she must to survive Alaric, her new master, who is determined to make her pay for what she did.

The two are constantly at each others' throats. Contract or not, Clara is done with this creature of the night and world of darkness. She runs, but Alaric won’t let her escape.

Recognizing things cannot continue as they are, Alaric makes a deal with her: If she can draw a single drop of blood from Alaric, he will consider her debt paid. But if she attempts and fails, she owes him. The price of her failure? A simple kiss. One that could change everything as she feels her attraction to him growing.

ugh her pride / cliffhanger

over so good I enjoy it very much. only 2 things I did not like about it. 1. repeat the same line & the say "lacking my lips" kinda over Redundant. 2. This female character gets on my nerves. I get pride however she rather die a torturous death. Then make a simple request. It almost seems like she wants to die instead of survive. I hope the next book clears it up.

Heard this all before?

I am only on chapter 5 but so far I feel a Deja Vu!! This feels like a Court of Roses and Thorns verbatim!! Please someone tell me it's not the same!!!

Cliffhanger

Hate cliffhangers I wish the author could have mentioned that it was a series before I spent my credit on it. Am returning it.

Finally, a strong female lead!!

Great series thus far, I have listened to the first two books and I identify with Clara so much. She is strong-willed and tenacious. I will say, she tends to be more of a passive character thus far when it comes to making decisions for her life, but she takes the punches like a champ and focuses on coming out on top. Or at least... staying alive, which is a lot to say for the world she's in!
The chemistry between Clara and Alaric is a slow burn kind of connection. They are fascinating characters in a mysterious and dangerous world, and I cant wait to see where the third book takes us! :)

Huge cliffhanger, ensure all in series available

I was glued to this book, lost sleep listening. Narrators (especially male) did excellent job. Just as Book was getting to next phase in relationship, BOOK ENDED ON CLIFFHANGER. As of today, none of rest in series available in audiobooks.

Definitely glad I purchased

If you don’t compare it to anything else you’ve heard despite the reference that we heard before this is a great read! Glad I found it after book two was already published because WHEW that cliffhanger was gnarly! All in all I’m glad I gave it a shot! On to book I go!

Meh

The writing isn't great, and if you enjoy things making sense this book will greatly irritate you. For example, Clara ducked under the vampire's arms to get away from him, but then the next moment she's still standing right in front of him with no description how she got there. It's like movie scenes edited to go together but that don't line up. This happens a lot. Clara is also oblivious and painfully thick throughout the book and has "revelations" that the reader figured out pages ago. The narrator also doesn't do a good job with heightened fear or emotions. She sounds exactly the same all through the book. Male narrator is good. This book is also very repetitive. If I had to read one more time- he bent to my neck and I waited for him to bite, but he didn't- I may have quit before the end. Meh. Won't be finishing the series.
