Story
Emma is the one that got away. The only survivor of a serial killer known in the tabloids as “The Hairdresser”, because of the trophies he takes from his victims. The police aren't convinced. Nor is her husband. She never actually saw her tormentor properly, but now she recognizes him in every man she sees. Haunted by the horrifying incident and unwanted notoriety, Emma gives up her job as a psychiatrist and retreats from the outside world to recuperate at home, where it’s quiet. Where she can be anonymous and safe. Where no one can hurt her.

Story
When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz, eager to boost morale while walking the fine line between truth and censorship. But the Germans are not the only ones Londoners have to fear as a series of murders flame up amid the ashes. The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

This year, the book club is all about fill-your-heart reads, an escape from the chaos of the everyday—running a business, raising a family, juggling a hundred to-dos. Even the dog is demanding. Since Laurel’s divorce, she feels like the Worst Mom Ever. Her skepticism of men may have scarred her vulnerable daughters. Cassie has a habit of falling for man-boys who dump her once she fixes them. Paris knows good men exist. She’s still reeling after chasing off the only one brave enough—and foolish enough—to marry her.

Being a typewriter is not as easy as it looks. Surrounded by books (notorious attention hogs) and recently replaced by a computer, Olivetti has been forgotten by the Brindles—the family he’s lived with for years. The Brindles are busy humans, apart from twelve-year-old Ernest, who would rather be left alone with his collection of Oxford English Dictionaries. Once a collector of words, now Olivetti only collects dust. He gets a rare glimpse of action from Ernest’s mom, Beatrice—his used-to-be frequent visitor—only for her to drop him off at Heartland Pawn Shop and leave him behind.

The last thing I expect on my trip to Sweden is a moose standing in the middle of the road—or the mysterious, bearded ranger who pulls me from my wrecked car. Now, a storm's brewing, and I'm being carried into a secluded mountain cabin by a Nordic God rippling with muscle. Inside, I'm greeted by three ridiculously hot Swedish mountain men.

Trish O’Kane is an accidental ornithologist. In her nearly two decades writing about justice as an investigative journalist, she'd never paid attention to nature. But then Hurricane Katrina destroyed her New Orleans home, sending her into an emotional tailspin. Enter a scrappy cast of feathered characters—first a cardinal, urban parrots, and sparrows, then a catbird, owls, a bittern, and a woodcock—that cheered her up and showed her a new path. Despite being hailed as one of the best guitarists of his era, George Harrison, particularly in his early decades, battled feelings of inferiority. He was often the butt of jokes from his bandmates owing to his lower-class background and, typically, was allowed to contribute only one or two songs per Beatles album out of the dozens he wrote.

The double murder of a married couple in a small Washington town draws FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that mirrors a decades-old crime. Twenty-five years ago—to the day—Alex Parker murdered his parents, then took his own life, leaving behind a note admitting everything. Raisa, paired with forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny, uses her skills to read between the lines. Especially now that paranoid postings on a conspiracy thread suggest that Alex was a victim himself.

Publisher's summary
A shocking discovery of human bones reopens an almost fifty-year-old cold case—and rips apart the lives of a group of friends—in a riveting novel by Loreth Anne White, the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Maid’s Diary.
When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen.
Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.
The friends are now highly respected, affluent members of their communities, and none of them ever expected the dark chapter in their past to resurface. But as Jane and forensic anthropologist Dr. Ella Quinn peel back the layers of secrets, the group begins to fracture. Will one cave? Will they turn on each other?
The investigation takes a sharp turn when Jane discovers a second body—that of the boy long blamed for Annalise’s disappearance. As the bones tell their story, the group learns just how far each will go to guard their own truth.
Critic reviews
“Fans of Louise Penny should try this gripping story from White that combines the best elements of a cold-case investigation with a well-developed suspense novel.”—Library Journal (starred review)
“[A] thought-provoking cold-case mystery.”—Manhattan Book Review
“A deftly crafted and simply riveting read from fist page to last…”—Midwest Book Review

Story
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

Hard to follow, sensitive content
The story jumps around from past to present, character to character, case to case, and place to place, so even when a key character dies, it’s a bit hard to remember that person’s relevance. The story was complex and interesting. Perhaps the book is better in print than as an audiobook, though I really would have preferred a different culprit and circumstances in the end.
Also, wasn’t fan of the narrator’s voices for minor characters. The accents were muddled, and some voices sounded lecturing or highly confident at moments when a character should have been vulnerable. It starts right at the beginning, with the grief group leader who sounds like she’s giving a sales pitch or a dressing down to a group of grieving people about why their feelings are wrong, and continues especially among minor female roles.

Not my favorite
This was a OK story. For some reason I just didn’t like the jumping around from the different characters. I also didn’t like some of the political views that were stated. as if they were fat. I am usually a huge fan of this author, and all of her books that I’ve read prior to this one.

Great Mystery
I loved the twists and turns of the story. I was excited when it was revealed I had guessed correctly. My son thinks I'm nuts as I started shouting "I Knew It!".
My only dislike was not getting a epilogue type closure. Perhaps there will be a sequal to this book.

This Was .....
It takes a lot for most stories to hold my attention, especially when there are several points points of view to consider. This one: perfection!!! There was so much that I was in suspense til the end, which is rare. It kept me on edge, and when it all unraveled, I was impressed (and pissed at some characters). Kudos, this story was well written and full of suspense.
