Publisher's summary

Hopalong rides into a firestorm of violence and betrayal. On the rain-drenched trail to the lawless town of Seven Pines, Hopalong discovers two men - one dead, the other badly wounded. Returning with medical help, Hopalong finds the wounded man has been shot through the temple. Who would commit such a murder? To find out, Hopalong hires on at Bob Ronson’s Rocking R Ranch. There he learns that more than 1,000 cattle have been run off by men keeping one scheming eye on the ranch and the other on the monthly stagecoach shipments of gold.

Hopalong is determined to stop those responsible. But even the best gunfighter needs men he can trust to watch his back, men willing to risk their lives to do what’s right. With their help, Hopalong fights to save the Rocking R, only to find himself the target of a ruthless gunman in a life-and-death struggle for frontier justice.

Great western

I’ve also read that LL disowned these stories and I don’t believe it. From what I can tell after listening to many of his works, these are definitely among the best constructed of his tales. Sometimes he is very self indulgent - Walking Drum - or pads his novels with irritating formulaic scenes that detract from the plots; and at other times he really delivers the goods of a skilled author fleshing out an entire genre. The Hopalong stories are a cut above the rest in my opinion: perhaps the enforced discipline of writing to a strict set of character traits made him focus on the quality of the work. Just guessing. But I have really enjoyed each of these four novels and certainly plan to listen again. Great action, good plots, glimpses of intriguing western lore, always interesting characters and humor that comes as an excellent relief from the gritty and often grim but convincing Western context. Highly recommended.

A typical Louis Lamour Western

A typical Louis Lamour Western but the good guy doesn't get the girl. It's still good.

Style different, Still L'amour

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For any friends who love westerns, this is another quality job by L'amour. His style is still somewhat different, since it is a continuation of another's 'Hopalong' series, but still a great read.

What other book might you compare The Trail to Seven Pines to and why?

I would compare this favorably with any of the 4 Hopalong books he wrote.

Any additional comments?

As is normally the case with LAmour, this is a very entertaining book.

Great Story, Excellent Delivery.

The reader is amazing with the voices and with the flow. Never got tired of listening. The story is great (listened while sitting around a campfire, which really drew me into the theme) . Certainly recommended for any who love the genre.

Trial to Seven Pines

Another well told story of the Old West by Loius L’Amour. As a kid, I was fascinated by William Boyd’s portrayal of Hopalong Cassidy. The story does justice to my memories.

Great Western

Thoroughly enjoyed this Hopalong Cassidy western. Excellent reader. An early Louis L’Amour effort. He initially published these 4 Cassidy books under a pen name.

Rather bland

Boring story lines that need less action and less fighting and shooting. Needs more description of the scenery and ambiance. Don't care for Hopalong character like I do BOWDRIE.
