Publisher's summary

The British Empire is in danger of collapse and teeters on the brink of war with the Kaiser Reich. Spies and saboteurs play at deadly games in the British shipyards as each side seeks naval superiority. Ian Rollins is collateral damage in their shadow war. The "accident" and his grievous injuries are about to bring his naval career to an ignominious end. But with the aid of a former Pinkerton detective, a clandestine agent for the Admiralty, a brace of Serbian savants, and one mostly sober valet, he might survive. If he can master the skills necessary to command the world's first fully operational combat submarine, the HMS Holland Ram, and protect the secrets of the Thunderbolt.

A very enjoyable steampunk/alternate history read

I downloaded both the Kindle edition and audible version dof the story. It's well-researched, but for an issue or two. Daniel Collard did a superb job on the narration! most of the characters are well-developed, and I'm looking forward to subsequent stories.

I did have an issue with the way Geoffrey described narcosis. I found it unlikely that Rawlins could develop such a severe case of Narcosis at only 100 ft. He also had a hangover afterwards, which is atypical of narcosis. Narcosis symptoms almost always dissipate after ascending a few feet. That the characters had to breathe oily air out of a compressed air bottle was even more disturbing. This type of air is toxic. Later in the story, characters had to ascend from an even deeper depth , but had no issues.

So much fun!

Humor, romance, action, and all told with amazing attention to detail by both writer and reader. Loved every minute.

Great Steampunk Adventure

I'm adding this book to my list of great steampunk novels. Likable heroes, awesome gadgets that further a good plot.

All steam...no PUNK

This book was well written and well narrated, BUT... 1. The story was weak. (It should have been a short story.) 2. The story was so SLOW. 3. There was very little action. I expected more from a book advertised to be of the steampunk genre.
