Publisher's summary

Being former cops they could not stand by and watch their neighbors be attacked by roving gangs.

Jake invited five fellow cops and their families to join him and his family to set up a safe and secure retirement community in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. The families worked together to become self sufficient and off the grid, as they believed at some point in the not too distant future, something would happen to cause a major collapse and survival situation. IT DID. This is their story of the perils of survival

Worth the time with a free credit

Pretty good story line but kind of slow .
The biggest disappointment was the narrator who’s translation of dialog was nearly cringe worthy.
I would give it a six out of ten or in this case 3 out of five.

100% fatal shootings? I don’t buy it!

This was a pretty good story. There were a lot of characters, so sometimes insist track of who was who, but I’ll listen to it again and pick up that slack.

One thing bothered me though, because it seemed “too perfect.” Every time the main characters were attacked and had to shoot back, they killed every single person they ever shot! Wait, what?!!! Nobody was just wounded? None of the bad guys they show EVER hung onto life long enough to be interrogated? I actually think that the author did not want to deal with the ethically difficult problem of “what do we do with these wounded bad guys? We don’t have jails. If we release them they will return with their friends. What do we do with them?” So to solve the problem of summary executions (too gritty?) the author seems to have simply made sure that 100% of the bad guys who got shot, died IMMEDIATELY from their wounds.

Sorry. That’s too convenient, too clean. Doesn’t jibe with what I have heard that real combat is like.

All in all though, I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

5 stars with a few caveats…

Overall I loved this story and would encourage others to buy this book as well. I listen to about a book a day and this is one that I appreciated for the speed and depth of the storyline taking place over years rather than days or weeks. Well done. A few things bothered me… the one I’ll mention was the talk and thought that needed to be put into confronting Manny’s group. The cops had already confronted many other degenerates with no talk of after effects or repercussions on the soul with those so it made no sense that it occurred here especially after witnessing what manny’s group did to the family with children. That was way out of place.

The narrator frequently made it difficult to distinguish scene changes. One scene often ran into the next without even the slightest pause or change in voice inflection making it hard to figure out that one scene ended and another had started. He needs to work on his voice inflection and adding some feeling to his work. The voice changes he made from character to character were bizarre and funny at times. Not what should happen.

Continue writing Mr. Bosak!! You are very talented and gave a refreshing take on this genre!

Written with strong LEO bias

Not a bad book, but the LEO bias with a weird combination of do-gooder superiority to almost nieve was a hard one to keep down at times. The bias was even more obvious once Homeland security and the military got involved.

At times I felt it was rushed almost like the author couldn't wait to get to the end more than the reader. I have absolutely nothing against the men and women in blue, (98% pro-blue) and in today's times of extreme basterdizing, I'm glad it wasn't more piling on, I just felt was over the top. unless you propopo, you probably won't enjoy this.

robotic narration

Pretty right wing storyline. Like all you need is weapons, cops, and military....with a 'good woman at home' to take care of cooking, cleaning and child-rearing. Very sexist and 1950's-- the men rook care of all things physical, the women cooked, did laundry and cleaned. I run my entire household. I'm a 6'2" woman, and strong as an ox....so this was very off-putting and very dated ideas of women.
Story was very 'stiff' and lacking any emotion, enthusiasm, excitement, passion....but was interesting in terms of learning a bit more about prepping. Dome glaring errors in the prepping though...

Story seemed okay

The story seemed okay but the narrator was very difficult to listen to. I listened to the sample and it seemed good but couldn’t listen past chapter 4 kind of sorry I spent a credit on it

Could have been better

The dialogue doesn’t flow and is choppy. There seems to be a lot of prejudice against a variety of ethnic groups. There is too much talk about the guns and firepower. I got it right away. They are heavily armed and must be for protection. There is also a lot of repetition. Saying the same thing too many times. Could be tightened up with good editing. The story itself has potential but sort of gets lost in poor structure.
