The Stolen Relic by David Marcum is an interesting story that finds Holmes and Watson investigating the theft of St. Nicholas’s bones. This book has a bit more spiritual and religious discussion than I’ve seen in other Holmes stories. But, then again, it is Christmastime and a relic of St. Nicholas. The narration by Michael Langan is outstanding. His performance brings the story to life.

Good Sherlock Holmes pastiche

"The Stolen Relic" by David Marcum is a captivating audiobook that immerses listeners in a fascinating tale of mystery and spirituality. In this story, we find Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson embarking on a unique investigation centered around the theft of St. Nicholas's bones, which have mystical significance. The inclusion of spiritual and religious themes adds depth to the narrative, making it stand out from other Holmes stories. It's a perfect choice for the Christmas season, as it revolves around the relic of St. Nicholas.

What sets this audiobook apart is the clever narrative approach. Instead of the traditional format of Watson's journals, we are treated to a captivating conversation between Watson and his wife. This change in perspective allows us to gain deeper insights into Watson's thoughts and emotions, giving the story a more personal and engaging touch. It's a refreshing twist that adds a new dimension to the storytelling.

Much like "The Blue Carbuncle," this story is set during the Christmas season, which adds a delightful festive atmosphere to the narrative. The holiday backdrop enhances the overall charm of the audiobook, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a heartwarming and thought-provoking Sherlock Holmes adventure.

In summary, "The Stolen Relic" is a must-listen audiobook for fans of Sherlock Holmes who appreciate a blend of mystery, spirituality, and a fresh narrative perspective. David Marcum has skillfully crafted a story that not only entertains but also invites listeners to ponder the mystical aspects of the Christmas season. It's a delightful addition to the Holmesian canon that is sure to leave you enchanted and satisfied.

The story’s mystery about a stolen relic is not much of a mystery for Holmes; instead, the story centers around the mystery of the relic. Interesting story. Performance was excellent.

This has happened to me with Holmes stories before: the story ends with Sherlock accepting that his belief in reason isn’t enough to solve the mystery. While that in and of itself isn’t an issue, it’s the fact that Holmes accepts either blind luck or in this case miracles so easily that it feels out of character. It’s also unsatisfying as a conclusion in general. Sherlock to me would instead drive himself to distraction to discover the facts behind the case and ultimately solve it. I was speculating as to what or who would ultimately prove responsible and when that wasn’t forthcoming beyond “Christmas miracle” I was left with a dejected feeling.

Holmes accepting miracles doesn’t work
