About this listen

Wren Blythe has long enjoyed being among the Northwoods, helping her father with programming at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing, an all-out search ensues, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons, the murderess, who still roams the woods. Joining the search, Wren stumbles upon the Coons cabin ruins and a rotting porcelain doll. But even more terrifying is seeing her name etched on the doll's foot like a sinister omen.

In 1930, Ava Coons has spent the last ten years carrying the mantle of mystery since she emerged from the forest as an eight-year-old girl, spattered with blood, dragging a logger's axe. She has accepted she'll never remember what happened to her family.

When a member of the town of Tempter's Creek is murdered, rumors spread that Ava's secret is more malicious than previously imagined.

Both women discover that to save the innocent, they must face an insidious evil.

Thrilling!

I’m shook. So gripping—twisty—AMAZING! I’m afraid I’ll give spoilers if I say more.

Wow

I took this because it was free. I had no idea what I was getting into! Amazing! The author did a fabulous job weaving time, stories, families, and mysteries all together. Great performance as well.

Interesting story

This is an interesting story with some good twists. While the narrator is a good reader, she was over dramatic at points that are distracting. The story is well worth a listen!

It had moments...

There were enough good moments in this book to keep going. In the end, I did not find the story satisfying.

The book is set in rural northern Wisconsin. The narrator made the characters sound like they lived in the rural south.

Clean suspense

I love the clean writing style. It's so refreshing to read a book with Christian themes, but not "churchy"! The narrator wasn't my favorite. The speech pattern was drug out waaaayyy too slow and over the top dramatic. However, it was made tolerable by adjusting the narration speed on the Audible app to 1.20x.

Narrator breathing distracting

The book was good, but long winded. The narrator's almost gasping breaths the forest halls the book were very annoying and distracting.

I am Speechless!

Oh my goodness, this is such a wonderful story! (Two stories really.) I was in on the edge of my seat or in tears many times. There is so much raw emotion in these characters. So real.
Kathryn Markey's narration was Excellent! The feeling she put into Jaime Jo Wright's words was truly moving.

Loved it!

Personally I loved the narrator. I thought she was perfect for the book. I agree the performance can make or break any audible book. And I'm pretty picky. I say bravo

can this narrator have more saliva or what?

it was so gross and frustrating to hear the narrator slurp/suck in her saliva every other minute. I think there was even a gulp. it totally ruined things.
