Publisher's summary

It's 1939, and Canada is on the cusp of entering World War II. Seventeen-year-old farm girl Cornelia is heartbroken when she learns that her beloved soldier, Henry, has been killed in a train wreck. Alone and carrying a heavy secret, she makes the desperate choice that will haunt her for years to come. Never telling a soul, Cornelia pours out the painful events of the war in her diary.

Many decades later, Cornelia's granddaughter, Benita, is in the midst of her own crisis, experiencing several losses in the same week, including her job and the grandmother she adored. The resulting emotional and financial stress takes its toll on her and her husband, Ken, who is also unemployed. On the brink of divorce, she discovers Cornelia's diary. Now the secrets of her grandmother's past will lead Benita on an unexpected journey of healing, reunion, and renewed faith.

This story was a surprisingly profound gift.

This story was a surprisingly profound gift at a time of turbulence. A reminder of the most basic values that were shared with me by my "Grams" who was a neighbor and treasured friend. I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves social history, personal rebirth, or needs a little bit of help finding their path at any point in their life. By weaving the present and the past with the trials and glories of each, Terri Todd delivers a beautiful story that will pop up in your daily life again and again long after you have finished the book. Kate Rudd's delivery of the audio will envelope you as you weave through the different ages in the lives of some great characters.

What did you love best about The Silver Suitcase?

The Silver Suitcase (Kindle Edition)
This is my first time reading this author. I enjoyed the story line. I also liked how it went from past to present with the diaries. Also, there was a promise that the main character (Corrie) had inferred to that played out surprisingly at the end. I look forward to reading Ms. Todd's other books.

What other book might you compare The Silver Suitcase to and why?

Not a book but a TV series called Early Edition. It was about a man who received a newspaper which foretold the future by one day.

Have you listened to any of Kate Rudd’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no, this is my first experience.

Who was the most memorable character of The Silver Suitcase and why?

Corrie

Because of her mother's death, Corrie had become bitter against God. But later in her life she had a true spiritual renewal that gave her strength and peace.

A Diary, WWII, and Wrestling with God

Life on the farm isn't easy for Cornelia, her daddy and brother since her mother passed away . . . and Cornelia puts on a good front for everyone, even after having to quit school to cook, clean and plant the garden . . . but she pours her heart out in her diary . . . and she gets a new one every year for Christmas . . . its the only place where she can be honest . . . and honest, she is . . . she hates God . . . what kind of God takes a girl's mama? She'd been going to church all her life, was still going every Sunday . . . where the preacher and her Sunday School teacher think her so grown up and strong . . . and she was . . . she'd learned to get the meals on the table and even bake pies . . . keeping her journals hidden, Cornelia chronicles her young life during the depression and leading up to WWII, meeting young Henry Roberts the summer before he enlists for the war . . . and falling in love . . . when Henry is killed in a train wreck prior to leaving for overseas, Cornelia's life is turned upside down . . . setting into motion decades of secrets and pain . . . yet God sends her a Comforter . . . and Cornelia finally sees the God of mercy and love that her family has always believed in and trusted . . . This generational tale of buried secrets, deep love and sacrifice is one of the best I've come across . . . I would have liked a little more to tie up loose ends with the father's side of the family . . . a sequel would be nice . . .

Beautiful story of faith, secrets and connections!

I loved this story of faith and connection, spanning 4 generations. Interwoven stories of diverse and connected characters, all woven together by their connection to Cornelia Simpson, with quite a journey in this story.

I loved this beautifully written Christian book...but

I'll make this short because I was disappointed. When I started reading and listening I was thrilled! The main character getting closer to the Lord, speaking scriptures and getting to the heart of what "The Silver Suitcase" was all about. Then about 1 hour maybe more from the end, it was all over the place? And to add insult to injury when it said Epilogue: she may have just said, "blah, blah blah, blah blah, blah!" I had no clue what the heck it had to do with the main character or her grandmother???

Also towards the end we have a couple who needs counseling...not enough spent on that. When I read a book, and there are no part 2 of it, I expect closures, and I didn't get it here! I was really upset because I literally spent all night listening and re listening to parts I just didn't understand why they were there?

Kate Rudd you write marvelous Christian books and this one would have received 5 stars all by itself, but you lost me towards the end and that upset me...but thank you for mentioning Jesus (beautiful) and scriptures and leaning on Him to survive!!
