The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

In August 1860, would anyone have conceived that the upcoming November presidential election would result in the unraveling of a nation and a war between its parts, a war that would claim more lives than all the nation's other wars combined? Told through the lens of West Point classmates and graduates, THE PARTING is a factual narrative of the impulsive descent of the United States of America from peace to war from August 1860 through the First Battle of Bull Run, July 1861.

As World War II ended, the United States stood as the dominant power on the world stage. In 1947, to support its new global status, it created the CIA to analyze foreign intelligence. The Cold War was an obvious reason for this transformation—but not the only one.

For more than ten years, Eppolito and Caracappa moonlighted as the mob's early warning alert system, leaking names of mobsters secretly cooperating with the government and crippling investigations by sharing details of surveillance, phone taps, and impending arrests. The Lucchese boss called the two detectives his crystal ball: Whatever detectives knew, the mafia soon learned.

On a cold winter day in 1832, Sarah Maria Cornell was found dead in a quiet farmyard in a small New England town. When her troubled past and a secret correspondence with charismatic Methodist minister Reverend Ephraim Avery was uncovered, more questions emerged. Was Sarah’s death a suicide...or something much darker? Determined to uncover the real story, Victorian writer Catharine Read Arnold Williams threw herself into the investigation as the trial was unfolding and wrote what many claim to be the first American true-crime narrative, Fall River.

On December 10, 1887, a shark fishing boat disappeared. On board the doomed vessel were the Walkers—the ship’s captain Frederick, his wife Elizabeth, their three teenage sons, and their dog—along with the ship’s crew. The family had spotted a promising fishing location when a terrible storm arose, splitting their vessel in two and leaving those onboard adrift on the perilous sea. When the castaways awoke the next morning, they discovered they had been washed ashore—on an island inhabited by a large but ragged and emaciated man who introduced himself as Hans.

As Eric Dezenhall reveals in this eye-opening history, in some instances, one couldn’t have functioned without the other. From Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Richard Nixon to Joseph R. Biden, the mob has done presidential dirty work, including attempts to assassinate foreign leaders, harass America’s enemies, and put our chief executives in office.

The hidden heroes
This book is really cool. Sophie Scholl and the White Rose were so brave, standing up to the Nazis even when it was super dangerous. The stuff they did, like sneaking around with pamphlets, was intense. It’s a crazy story that shows how far people will go for what’s right. Definitely worth a read if you’re into history or brave people doing bold things.

Extremely Moving
This audiobook left me both deeply moved and better informed about an incredible chapter of WWII history. Sophie Scholl’s courage in the face of overwhelming danger is portrayed so vividly, and I came away with a newfound respect for the sacrifices of ordinary people during that time. The rich historical details and captivating storytelling kept me hooked from start to finish. It’s not often you find a book that educates and inspires in equal measure, making it a must-listen for anyone curious about history, resistance, or acts of true heroism.

A Powerful Window into True Resistance
The story of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose left me deeply moved. It captures the courage and moral conviction it takes to defy tyranny, especially in the face of unimaginable danger. I appreciated the focus on the group's pamphlets and their message, which gave me a profound understanding of their impact. The vivid depiction of wartime Munich added a real sense of place and brought history to life in a way I hadn’t experienced before.

Unsung heroes finally getting their roses
Although there are many challenges about living in this day and age (though most would say far less challenges than the time period depicted in this tile, for example), one of the contrasting benefits is that we have more and more access to information that serves us, and some of that comes in the form of unsung heroes finally getting their roses (no pun intended)–probably because it’s naturally time for the world to hear about these individuals on a larger scale than ever before. The historic documentation of Sophie Schol and the White Rose is the kind of inspirational integrity and fortitude-building content we must pay attention to should tyrannic misinformation or censorship begin to spread in such a way again, regardless of outlet or region. This is a fantastically educational title that will shine a light on happenings that were not only courageous, but embody the brave defiance of hazardous regimes.
