About this listen

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre presents H.P. Lovecraft’s tale of a house with a horrifying history in a 1930s-style radio drama. The story bounds to life with a cast of nineteen professional actors, thrilling sound effects and an original orchestral score by Troy Sterling Nies. On picturesque College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, an old colonial house has sat empty for decades. No one would consider renting the house with its long history of woes and unexplained deaths. Can a young man and his elderly great-uncle get to the bottom of the unspeakable causes of the house's affliction? Or will their investigation bring them face to face with an enduring evil?

Outstanding!!

The HPLS Dark Adventure audio dramatizations of Lovecraft's works are some of the most outstanding and entertaining adaptations of Lovecraft's works.
In fact, I think, they set the standard on how to dramatized Lovecraft's works on radio.
The superlative production quality from the actors and sound effects are just amazing.
These audio dramatizations will stand the test of time, and will be appreciated for generations by any person who loves the stories and genius of Lovecraft.
Thank you HPLS for producing these gems and Audible for offering them.
These productions never fail to excite my imagination and I just love listening and relistening to them.

Good performance of a lackluster story

Dark Adventure Radio Theater always crushes it with their performances and adaptations but this is a rather simple story with not much to it

A Great Series, The Shunned House Isn’t the Best

The HP Lovecraft Society is releasing an excellent series of radio plays based on HP Lovecraft stories. I have listened to nine so far and can recommend them all. I put off hearing them for a long time because I love Lovecraft. I was afraid dramatic readings would cheapen the stories. They do not. The radio plays are amazingly well done! All of them are compelling. A few are downright scary (the Colour Out of Space is particularly freaky).

Sadly, the Shunned House is my least favorite of the HPLS’s radio dramas. The Shunned House has always been one of my favorite Lovecraft stories. The original is well-thought out and extraordinarily well-crafted. It’s subtle, compelling, and very believable. It’s almost an academic or scholarly horror tale. Perhaps that’s why it was hard to turn into a radio drama.

The radio drama is fine. But it’s very different from the original. The story has been embellished and expanded. And not in a good way (in my opinion). The subtlety is gone. Even worse, a fair amount of humor has been incorporated. As always with the HPLS, the radio play itself is well made. It’s worth a listen. But it’s not a great representation of The Shunned House. In fact, after I finished the radio drama, I went back and reread the story to confirm it really is a good story. It is. The radio drama is. . . something different. Enjoy the radio play for what it is.
