About this listen
For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of all her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient subterranean Temple of Mithra.
From the moment she stepped into the pagan darkness and discovered the corpse of the repulsive Albert, one of her fellow students, she was afraid. Not even the comforting presence of the perceptive and practical Jacqueline Kirby could erase the fear that was nourished by one small accident after another. "Accidents" that came dreadfully close to killing her.
Someone was stalking Jean, someone ruthless and determined. Before long she could see no chance of rescue from the ever-present terror...no hope of escape...nothing but death...

Story
“They’re going to kill me soon,” begins the note Amelia discovers in an antique hurdy-gurdy. From that moment on, the shy young woman finds herself doing all kinds of things she never thought possible. Between newfound intimacies and a risky journey into the past, Amelia comes to see herself in a whole new light. The scrawled note drives Amelia to find out what happened to the person who wrote it, identified only as “Hannah.” Who was Hannah? Was she really murdered? Amelia’s investigation leads her to dizzying new heights of romance and danger. Like a tightrope walker, she must not look down—especially when she finds herself in situations uncannily similar to those Hannah faced just before her murder. Like the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries for which Dorothy Gilman is famous, The Tightrope Walker features a spirited and unpretentious heroine and an intriguing mystery, enhanced by colorful settings and characters. Ruth Ann Phimister’s skillful narration adds a personal dimension, making you care about Amelia and the fascinating and dangerous people she meets.

Fun story, robotic narrator
Rollicking fun whodunnit! It would be much improved with a more skilled narrator. It's hard to tell the difference between the two main women characters, and the Irish accent of another doesn't quite work. Still, all in all, a fun listen.

Mispronunciations drive me mad. Monotonous. Not wonderful voices. On the other hand, the story and writing are lovely
Conlin is a mediocre voice artist. I have Naked Once More with Conlin and another version narrated by Barbara Rosenblat - Rosenblat is soooo superior. Would love hear this with Rosenblat

Disappointing.
I love all Elizabeth Peters books, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both the Amelia Peabody & Vicki Bliss series(read by Barbara Rosenblat). I have to say the "performance" on this one left me cold. It wasn't performed, merely read in a flat, uninteresting voice, with very little on the way of emotion, voices or interest in the story. If the rest of the series is read by this same person, I may not go on. It's just too boring.

Better than expected!
I loved the story and it definitely kept my attention.
I couldn’t warm to the narration, however. It wasn’t bad but there was this haughty tone that carried through each character and that put me off.
