The Secrets to Outlining Your Novel: How to Clearly Organize Your Story Ideas into an Epic Book You Can Write and Publish
By John S. Warner
How many times have you gone through something and said “I could write a book about this!”? Now is the time to stop doubting and start planning!
Just as every great meal starts with a recipe, every epic novel starts with an epic outline.
But is an outline really necessary? Can’t you just wing it? Isn’t all that time on an outline better spent on actually writing? And doesn’t an outline just pour water on that spark of creativity?
That’s what you may have heard…until now!
In The Secrets to Outlining Your Novel, you will discover:
- How novel outlines improve the direction of a story, make the writing process easier, and reduce those time-consuming writer’s blocks
- The core elements of every novel outline and how to develop them so that they naturally entwine—rather than confuse the reader
- What type of writer you are (shocker: just because you don’t consider yourself a plotter doesn’t mean you can’t create an outstanding novel outline)
- Eleven types of outline methods that motivate you to type, write, sketch, and highlight
- The amazing technique Michael Crichton used to organize his plots into a logical timeline
- How to use “what ifs” to turn one sentence into a captivating novel while filling in those irritating plot holes
- How to organize your chapters without stressing about word count and cut-off points
- Thirty questions to develop character profiles and outlines so that they grow in line with your plot
- One of the most impactful chapters in a novel that only had one word
- Genre-specific advice and outline methods from best-selling masters like Julia Donaldson, Ken Follet, and Nicholas Sparks…to name a few!
And much more.
Writing is like the fable of The Hare and the Tortoise. Slow and steady will always beat quick and careless.

Story
It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

Roy Peter Clark, one of America’s most influential writing teachers, wants to change that by putting the glamour back into grammar.

Story
The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It's like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what's not. The Story Grid breaks down the component parts of stories to identify the problems. And finding the problems in a story is almost as difficult as the writing of the story itself (maybe even more difficult).
