About this listen

Dangerously addictive, The Secrets of Us is a pulse-pounding exploration of a disturbed psyche and the bond between two sisters desperate to escape a troubled past.

Foster sisters Krystal and Nichole have always been there for each other, so when Nichole is committed to a psychiatric hospital after trying to kill her husband, Krystal drops everything to defend her.

Scarred by a hard upbringing, Nichole and Krystal managed to construct comfortable lives for themselves. Krystal became a respected lawyer, and Nichole was happily married to an architect - until Nichole starts raving that her husband isn’t her husband, believing that he’s an imposter.

Driven by fierce loyalty, Krystal starts asking questions, but she’s not sure she can bear the answers. Her investigation leads to the sisters’ dark shared past...to a horrible tragedy and a well-guarded lie that cemented their sisterly bond.

But that lie can’t kill the truth - the battered, gasping, clawing truth that’s coming for them both. Now Krystal and Nichole must both fight for the lives they’ve built before they’re consumed by the one they left behind.

Not what I expected

I bought this book expecting to read / listen to a great mystery however towards the middle the part about Nicole became unbearable. Too much crazy psychology …it might be ok reading it but listening to screams over and over became too much. I just couldnt finish…

wonderful!

The narrator does a wonderful job. She does great character voices. She really makes the characters seem real and realistic! She helps you identify, and care about each character. psychological thriller is just the beginning of what this book truly is! two women who are so close, they might as well be sisters. They grow up together, they experience everything together. They have secrets together. This is just the tip of the iceberg! One woman is dead, who killed her, how, why? Is there just a few questions you will be asking. Was it the husband? Was it the wife? Was it the sister?

Secrets

I really enjoyed this book, and the narrators were fabulous. They brought the story alive in a way that's not always easy to do. I didn't see any of that coming in the end, but I guess it shows our secrets have a way of coming out.

Brilliant Story and Performances

I loved everything about this audiobook: both the shocking story and the incredible narration. I’ve never read a Lucinda Berry novel before this, but I’ve already bought several other Lucinda Berry books based on how incredible this book was. I’ve long adored Kate Rudd’s performances (she’s one of my favorite narrators, and I’ve bought many audiobooks based solely on the fact that she’s the narrator), and she did a stunning job narrating Krystal in this book. I’ve never heard Lauren Ezzo’s narration before, but her performance as the overwrought Nichole in this book means she’s also earned a top spot in my list of favorite narrators. I often wondered how her throat withstood the anguish she infused into her performance. I’d have given this book and its performances 10 stars if that were an option. I read and/or listen to about 100 books a year, and I can already tell that The Secrets of Us will be one of my favorite audiobooks of 2024, and it’s only January. Bravo Lucinda, Kate, and Lauren!!!

Great story that kept me interested.

I have read many of Luncinda Berry books and much like others you kinda know what is coming but you don’t wanted to be true. It’s a good past and present narrative.

WARPED

The mind is amazing. As this book shows, there is a very thin line between normal and insane. Depending on the degree, it may take very little to set your mind off. Sometimes leading you onto paths you would normally never take. In extreme cases...It can send you off into the abyss, with no chance to return. Even though Noelle takes steps, toward the end, to stop holding past events in. To free herself of the guilt she feels. It's hard to say just what the outcome will be. Will this release her from the clutches of Alice? Will her mind be completely free?

Can't stand this narrator doing a man's voice.

Why does the publisher or whomever chooses narrator cut costs by having a female do a male voice? Ruins a good story. The difference between being willing to use a credit or not. Thank goodness this one was a sale one.

Don’t take the reviews too seriously

As I was listening to the story I decided to look at the reviews in more depth. I was surprised to see that many of them were pretty low. I have to disagree with them on the ending. The ending is not traditional but does wrap up the story. I do agree with the comments about the female narrators performing the male roles. I have experienced this a couple times and when there is a large amount involving the female and male characters it can be a little confusing. It was a really good read and I would absolutely recommend so fans of the psychological thrillers.

Good, but the ending is disappointing

I picked this book because Kate Rudd is one of my favorite narrators.

The overall storyline was good, but I think the author spent way too much time in the past.

Possible spoiler!

I really liked this book, it was so interesting but I wish there was more at the ending. I feel like we knew what happened but I need more information because I feel like it got dumped on us so quickly. It was a great listen, I just wish there was more resolve. I would have liked to understand what all Veronica went through after and how Alice’s murder effected her but I guess we won’t know. Overall, it was very good!
