About this listen

From USA Today best seller and Audie nominee for Best Fantasy Novel Edward W. Robertson comes the hotly anticipated spin-off from the Cycle of Galand universe.

Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill.

Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

But the Lannovians may have just discovered a way.

As the meet unfolds, the Order's day of joy turns into a massacre. Cally and a grim soldier named Rowe are the only two to make it out of the ambush alive. As they flee into the wilds, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to destroy everything Cally holds dear - but in order to stop it, he may have to betray every one of the Order's beliefs.

Dante and Blaze have competition!

I did not expect the adventure to continue into the past, with another set of characters, one well known. Great to have more by pre-visiting adventures to save Narashotovik and find that darn book!

great story great performance

The story was awesome and so was the performance. like many other people have said the audio was horrible part of the time. I normally don't post anything negative on reviews but it was definitely jarring at times. I would still recommend the book.

Looking forward to the new books.

Prequels are always a tentative arena. But the story was as solid as the rest of the series has left me to expect.

Poor audio/recording quality repeatedly pops up in the first half, but it tapers off and was remedied by the end.

Awesome book

Audio production was awful.

Great story, TGR is amazing, but whoever produced this book really mailed it in. The constant brutal audio shifts throughout if intentional were brutal - if unintentional shows whoever the producer was - they were brutally incompetent.

Can’t wait for book 2!

audio is bad but not insufferable

Story is pretty good. Hard to have a reset on the Nether after Dante fighting the gods. The bad audio isn't as jarring as the reviews claim. Then again, I'm a musician with a high tolerance for bad audio.

Great story

This is a great entry point to an interesting story. There are some issues with the audio, but it’s not so bad as some other reviewers have made it out to be, likely a result of some editing process. Reynolds is fantastic, as ever, and lends flavor to the characters enough to get me through that initial period where you aren’t sure how to feel about the book. Looking forward to the next.

Another great read, great, consistent narrator too

Great book, awesome insight into its sequal books that came before! Let's not forget yet ANOTHER great performance by Tim Geralt Reynolds- one of the reasons it is so great on Audible!
