About this listen
Written in novelic form, this non-fiction book relates the love story, twenty-eight-year cancer battle and faith journey of Debbie and Chuck Wilson including part of Chuck's mourning process. Told alternately from both Debbie's and Chuck's perspectives, this very personal book includes a great deal of humor and intimate adult conversations about the realities of life and death. The intention of this book is to be inspirational to everyone and especially of help to anyone going through significant health or personal challenges.
Debbie and Chuck Wilson grew up in nearby small towns in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. They met at a teenage-party in 1974 when Debbie was a high school senior and Chuck a junior. Thus began a relationship that spanned nearly forty-years. Marrying in 1977, when Chuck was between his sophomore and Junior years of college, they raised two sons while Chuck served as a naval officer for twenty-two years. In 1987, Debbie discovered her first breast cancer and found herself in what was ultimately a twenty-eight-year battle with many forms of cancer.
Debbie's heroic fight to survive inspired many as she overcame episode after episode resulting from a genetic disorder known as Li-Fraumeni syndrome that pre-disposed her to developing various cancers. Having been told to get her affairs in order a number of times, she and Chuck grew in faith, love and developed a philosophical approach to deal with overwhelming things that come at us in life.

A Story that Spares No Pain and Spares No Joy
During Debbie's battle with multiple cancers, Chuck and Debbie had the opportunity to write about their story in a book that was ultimately published a few years after their story came to a close. It's been my honor to work with Chuck, and their daughter in law Jenn Planiol, over the past year to produce this audiobook of Chuck and Debbie's story, The Road Home. Both the book and the recording journey have been filled with laughs, struggles, and more than a little learning.
As Chuck, and even Jenn, lived all or parts of this story, they truly brought it to life through their narrations. I myself struggle with chronic illness, and hearing this story told has helped give me some new perspectives and simply a narrative to relate to. To anyone who is themselves, or has a loved one, struggling with chronic illness, grief, or a terminal condition, or even anyone just looking for a good story, I highly recommend The Road Home. It's been a wonderful journey to be a part of.
