About this listen

Post-Apocalyptic Fiction by Sean Liscom

“He told me that Ruiz and Wilcox had a way into the vault that nobody knew about. He told me that they were already inside and that the only way to get you out was to blow the elevator shaft apart. Jason, he recognized my voice. He didn’t confuse me with Isabella! It had to be him!”

“What else?”

“He knew the phones were going to fail. He told me the vault was flooding and I needed to mount a rescue. He knew everything! It was like he was standing here, in the middle of all this!” her voice grew louder. At that point, Ruiz was pulled from the hole. Kari immediately ran to the man. She extended her hand and pulled him up. “Where is he?” she demanded.

Excerpt

No sooner had my two Jeep convoy cleared the gate of the ranch when I received a radio call from Jill. She informed me that O.P. 3 had just spotted a Hummer driving down the road about five miles south of the ranch. It was headed south, away from Elko and the ranch at a high rate of speed. When we reached the main road, I cranked the wheel to the left and pushed the throttle to the floor.

The Hummer from the EDF may have had quite a lead on us but I was sure we could catch them. Pushing the Jeep through 80 mph, I eased to the right side of the dirt road, so the following Jeep wasn’t getting dusted out. The driver, Ryan, understood what I was doing, and he closed the distance between us once he had a clear view.

It didn’t take us long to get a visual on the fleeing Hummer. Their top speed was about 65. We were cruising at 90. When we were about a mile from them, I picked up the radio mic and repeatedly tried to raise them. Each attempt was met with silence.

“Guess they ain’t in the mood for polite conversation,” I remarked to the Mustang squad leader. A guy about my age named Rick.

“I guess not. How you wanna do this boss?”

“Not sure yet. Makin this up as I go.”

“Works for me,” he grinned.

We were now roughly 100 yards behind them, and I could see a man taking up a position behind the turret mounted 50 caliber atop the Hummer. I jammed hard on the brakes as did the second Jeep. The man behind the 50 spun it in our direction and opened fire. Much to my dismay, the windshield didn’t shatter, and I didn’t hear any of the heavy rounds impacting the Jeep. As we continued to scuff off speed and put some distance between us, he continued to shoot over our heads. It was almost as if he were trying to miss us.

“What the hell?” I muttered. I stabbed the throttle pedal and the Jeep instantly accelerated. When the gunner let his next volley fly, the rounds kicked up dirt just ahead of us. I let off the gas again.

“Ya want me to lean out the window and see if I can pick him off?” Rick asked.

“No, not yet anyway,” we continued to follow from about 250 yards as I tried to work through the problem in my head. That 50 could destroy both these Jeeps but he didn’t seem interested in doing that. The driver had to know he couldn’t outrun us, and we had twice the fuel range he had. What the hell was this guy playin at? It only took me a second or two to realize what was happening. Ambush. He was drawing us into an ambush."

Another Liscom Hit

Love this series. Yes the change of narrator was a hit and took a few minutes to get used to but in all an amazing continuation of an incredible story. Thanks Sean, keep them coming to audible.

I’m DONE with this series!

Going from best to worst narration! If I can’t tell when there is a different person talking, it ruins the book. And when I can’t associate the voice to who I ‘know’ is speaking, it ruins the book. I cannot imagine how or why this change was made, but it’s a disaster. The fire is gone! The vibrant, energized characters have become weak and elderly. Ridiculous! Yes! I’m shocked and outraged that whoever made this decision exhibited such poor judgement. I hope it was worth it, but seriously doubt that it will prove to be.

Love the series

I really loved the Shawn Liscum series. I did not care for this narrator. He sounded short of breath and just not up to the read.

Jacks back

Great story. By now I’m starting to guess some of the next books plot twist. I wonder if I’ll be correct.

Bad Narration

I am not sure what happened to the previous narrator but, selecting this was one was a bad mistake.

I agree with most all the reviews, this book was good but the narrator makes it hard to follow and you Ave to struggle to stay with the book.

The story doesn’t disappoint!!!

While the narrator change was a bit off putting at first, he tends to grow on you. Make sure you give him a chance.

As for the story Mr Liscom answers a bunch of questions, but opens up so many more. Which in turn leaves you on the edge of your seat awaiting book 5. Another well written story in the Ranch series that is full of action and suspense. All of your favorite ranch characters make an appearance and a few new “friends” that may or may not help in the survival of the ranch.

In short if I could give this more then 5 stars I would and would/will suggest this book and the series to many people.

Short!

Good thing this book was shorter then the previous three. The narrarator was sort of monotone. like the narraator from the other three books much better.

So glad the narrator was changed

When I first listened to this one I was astonished how awful the narration was. Now, Chris Lane is back and it’s much much much better.

Well, I am disappointed

as a subscriber to the ranch series although I broke my personal rule of not spending hard earned credits for a book less than 8 hours,I was excited to listen to another book. that was until I listened to it.
About the story.
the story was consistent with the previous in the series except this time it seemed somewhat like ground hog day, same old splick, different day.
after listening to it again I realized this part of the continuing saga needed to be told. in my opinion I believe this SHORT story was standing in as filler for the next book.

I ignored the reviews.stating the narrator had changed for the worse, that was until I listened to the book.
I usually don't say nay nay my brother without trying first, (I'm giving a review here don't make this weird), I was willing to give it a go after all folks have to start somewhere.
sad to say this was noticeable within the 1st chapter.
articulation, diction, clear concise speech are an audible narrators friends.
I will look for the next in the series but this one is definitely not a keeper for me. If the next one exceeds 8 hours and the narrator clears up his vocal issues, I will flip a coin.
hopefully this doesn't discourage the author because there is a good story here its just details, if it can't be fixed then I will have to say adios partner to the Ranch.
