Publisher's summary

When Duncan McKaskel decided to move his family west, he knew he would face dangers, and he was prepared for them. He knew about the exhausting terrain, and he was expecting the punishing elements. What he worried about was having to use violence against other men - men who would follow him and try to steal the riches that he didn't even possess.

Yet bandits were only part of McKaskel's worries. For a mysterious stranger, Con Vallian, had appeared one night and saved his life. But was Vallian's true interest Duncan's wife, Susanna? And, more important, how did she feel about him?

As they push on into the wilderness, Duncan must discover who is the greater threat - the thieves outside his camp or the enigmatic stranger within.

Louis La Moures is the best western writer, ever!

I missed Sam Elliott’s voice. It gives me shivers. His stories are so cool! Very classy.

the best?

This might be his very best. I have read many of his novels. None better than this one in my opinion.

Most enjoyable

The narrator was very good. The story was 100 times better than the movie. Has now become one of my favorite western reads.

A Fine L'Amour Story; An Excellent Narrator

What did you love best about The Quick and the Dead?

It's a nice departure from the standard L'Amour (not that they aren't all great), in that it follows a family moving westward. Still, bad guys and good guys supply action and tactics.

What does Jason Culp bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Culp is ideal for L'Amour stories, and likely for much more. Totally transparent, he doesn't try to affect the performance with the silly, phony Western accents that infect some renderings of L'Amour novels. Rather, he stays out of the way, generating believable voices for multiple characters, including females. Nicely done!

Any additional comments?

A worthy novel, well narrated.
