Publisher's summary

Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four.

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control.

By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

The Netflix Series is good

But I think I enjoyed listening to the novel more. Sparked me to get out our chess set and play during the pandemic, too.

This time the movie is better than the book.

I listened to this book after watching the adaptation, which I absolutely LOVED it's now one of my favorite shows ever. Since I already know what the characters look like, it was easy to envision everything in my head. It also felt like I was getting little bonus scenes. The story was, of course, amazing and inspiring. Beth Harmon is such an unforgettable powerful character and her journey was no different.

Overall, I do prefer the show more than the book. I think Anya Taylor Joy played a fantastic job playing Beth Harmon and just everything about the show was *chefs kiss*. But I still do recommend the book, it was very enjoyable and it did get me back into reading.

Side note: I wish Walter Tevis were alive to witness the incredible adaptation to his book

Amy Landon was great with the delivery of the story

exquisite

I loved the book but I think the Netflix series was even better. The book is rawer and grittier and smells like life sometimes makes you taste the bitterness of the alcohol in the mouth of an addict but the chess part sounds mechanical. In the series chess through Taylor-Joy becomes her spirit. The side characters are also more interesting there. Regardless, this is an excellent book

Stunning

I've never read such a nerve wracking, smartly crafted, intense story. And everything about it was perfect.

Wonderful

Even though I know nothing about chess. It is a deeply moving story that contains a multitude of levels. I thoroughly enjoyed this chess-based thriller!

Fascinating

I don’t play chess so a huge chunk of this went over my head but I was fascinated with the story. Beth’s rise in the male and Russian-dominated world of chess amidst struggles with addictions is an enjoyable read. I’ll update my review once I’ve seen the Netflix show but I have a suspicion this might be better if viewed rather than heard.

Fantastic Read - especially if you love the game

I really enjoyed the story and the reading. I liked it so much I plan to buy a hard copy, too. I watched the series and also found that enjoyable.

Spellbinding

Not being a chess player myself, I soon discovered that it didn’t matter. I was with her all the way, sometimes worried about her, then joyful to find hope. At times it seems impossible and her dance is excruciating. The reader’s voice transfixed me. For two days I did nothing but listen.

What an interesting listen

At times the narration was a bit robotic but all in all everything about this book was fun. Even if you don’t know a chess board like the back of your hand (as I do not) you can still feel the stress and excitement with each move. I would listen again.

Compelling Story

This is one of those books that makes me wake up thinking about it the next day. I really enjoyed it.
The story ranges from early childhood until age 18 or 19. It has extremely detailed chess “battles” throughout the book. I know nothing about chess, but I found it fascinating. The main character has flaws related to her childhood which cannot help but endear her to you. I wanted to give her advice and encouragement. Sometimes she was her own worst enemy.
It does touch on sex without much detail. There is frequent pill and alcohol use mentioned.
The narrator did okay. I liked the soft voice of the main character. Some of the accents were exaggerated, but not in an annoying way. I listened at 1.3 speed. I rarely listen at normal speed.
The only con was that, although the story ended at an okay stopping point, I wish it had covered a couple more years of her life. I would like to know how she and her friend “ended up”. Maybe there will be a sequel.
