About this listen
An angry prophet. A feared and loathsome enemy. A devastating storm. And the surprising message of a merciful God to his people.
The story of Jonah is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is also the most misunderstood. Many people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with Jonah: A rebellious prophet who defies God and is swallowed by a whale. But there's much more to Jonah's story than most of us realize.
In The Prodigal Prophet, pastor and New York Times best-selling author Timothy Keller reveals the hidden depths within the book of Jonah. Keller makes the case that Jonah was one of the worst prophets in the entire Bible. And yet there are unmistakably clear connections between Jonah, the prodigal son, and Jesus. Jesus in fact saw himself in Jonah. How could one of the most defiant and disobedient prophets in the Bible be compared to Jesus?
Jonah's journey also doesn't end when he is freed from the belly of the fish. There is an entire second half to his story - but it is left unresolved within the text of the Bible. Why does the book of Jonah end on what is essentially a cliffhanger? In this audiobook, Timothy Keller provides an answer to the extraordinary conclusion of this biblical parable - and shares the powerful Christian message at the heart of Jonah's story.

Story
Even people who are not professing Christians think they are familiar with the story of the Nativity. Every Christmas, displays of Jesus resting in a manger populate lawns and churchyards, and songs about shepherds and angels fill the air. Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this biblical story? Timothy Keller takes listeners on an illuminating journey into the surprising background of the Nativity.

Story
In an age where pleasing people, puffing up your ego and building your résumé are seen as the methods to "make it", the Apostle Paul calls us to find true rest in blessed self forgetfulness. In this short and punchy book, best selling author Timothy Keller, shows that gospel humility means we can stop connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self condemnation. A truly gospel humble person is not a self-hating person or a self-loving person, but a self-forgetful person.

The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. One similarity unites each testimony - that none of his most loyal and steadfast followers could "see" it was him, back from the dead. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith.

It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn't it full of regressive views? Didn't it condone slavery? Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller sees it another way. In Generous Justice, Keller explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. Here is a book for believers who find the Bible a trustworthy guide as well as those who suspect that Christianity is a regressive influence in the world.

Significant events such as birth, marriage, and death are milestones in our lives in which we experience our greatest happiness and our deepest grief. And so it is profoundly important to understand how to approach and experience these occasions with grace, endurance, and joy. In a culture that does its best to deny death, Timothy Keller - theologian and best-selling author - teaches us about facing death with the resources of faith from the Bible. With wisdom and compassion, Keller finds in the Bible an alternative to both despair or denial.

Critic reviews
“Unlike most suburban megachurches, much of Redeemer is remarkably traditional. What is not traditional is Dr. Keller’s skill in speaking the language of his urbane audience... Observing Dr. Keller’s professorial pose on stage, it is easy to understand his appeal.” (The New York Times)
“Fifty years from now, if evangelical Christians are widely known for their love of cities, their commitment to mercy and justice, and their love of their neighbors, Tim Keller will be remembered as a pioneer of the new urban Christians.” (Christianity Today)
“Timothy Keller puts a contemporary spin on the familiar story of the prophet who disobeyed God and was swallowed by a whale.” (Publishers Weekly)

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in the church. Not since the Reformation five centuries ago have so many Christians come together to ask whether the church is in sync with their deepest beliefs and commitments. These believers range from evangelicals to mainline Protestants to Catholics, and the person who best represents them is author and pastor Brian McLaren. In this much anticipated book, McLaren examines ten questions facing today's church - questions about how to articulate the faith itself, the nature of its authority, who God is....

The subtitle of this work, "Defeating Sin with Superior Pleasure", says it all. There is godly pleasure in applying the faith that first saved us in everyday circumstances, defeating the unbelief and lies that Satan throws at us. Fighting those lies, and the resultant anxiety, pride, impatience, and other sinful attitudes that trip us up, with what Piper calls "the purifying power of God's truth", blesses us with peace as we see God enabling us to live by faith in his promises and his grace.

Story
If God is sovereign, how can I be free to choose? But if God is not sovereign, how can he be God? Is it possible to reconcile God's sovereignty with human choice? This is one of the most perplexing theological questions. It's also one of the most personal. In Hand in Hand, Randy Alcorn says that the traditional approach to this debate has often diminished our trust in God and his purposes. Instead of making a one-sided argument from select verses, Alcorn examines the question in light of all Scripture.

What if the message of Jesus differs radically from the drumbeats of war we hear all around us? Using his own journey from war crier to peacemaker and his in-depth study of peace in the Scriptures, author and pastor Brian Zahnd reintroduces us to the gospel of peace.

For decades Americans were vaguely aware that Islamist barbarians were in the deserts of the Middle East and in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, executing "infidels" and raiding villages with unrecognizable names. The Muslim world seemed far away, remote, and irrelevant to our daily lives. Then came the terrorist attack of 9/11, followed by attacks at Fort Hood, the Boston Marathon, San Bernandino, Orlando, and more. Now terrorists seem to be emerging everywhere, unleashing senseless death and destruction on our nation.

Brilliant!
“The main point to Jonah was God’s grace. The main point to us of Jonah is God’s grace.”
In typical Keller fashion, he exposits the book of Jonah while applying it to our day and age. This book was excellent and had me looking in fresh ways at a book and story I have read many times before. For example, he compares the first two chapters of Jonah with the first half of Jesus’ Parable of the Prodigal Son (fleeing from God and finding Himself at the end of his rope) and the second two chapters of Jonah as the second half of the Parable with the older brother (judging God’s grace for undeserving people). Brilliant!
The first 2/3 of the book was a verse by verse look and breakdown of the book of Jonah, while the last 1/3 was a more depth look at some of the books’ themes: God’s incredible mercy, nationalism, patriotic pride, racism, moral relativism - themes that all apply perfectly to our culture.
He reminds us that the book of Jonah ends with God’s challenge to Jonah regarding the way he looked at the people of Nineveh (sinners) compared to God’s grace towards them. The book ends without any resolution as Jonah fades off the scene and leaves us considering God’s very challenge in our own lives.
Highly recommend!

A New Understanding of Jonah
Timothy Keller did an excellent job of bringing to light many aspects of the book of Jonah that I’d never thought of.
His observations were biblical, personally thought provoking and at times convicting. I have a totally new perspective of this story and I’ve recommended this book to several people.
Sean’s narration of the book was excellent.

Excellent book. Expertly narrated. The Prodigal Prophet presents the Gospel and the grace of God in a fresh and challenging way. I appreciated the call to examine myself and my relationship to God and others. Eye opening and heart-stirring.
An excellent read for those who have run from God in one way or another, or who cannot understand why this or that happened or didn't happen, or if you want to know what God wants from you. You'll be challenged, but you won't be disappointed.
