About this listen

“A masterpiece that can compare with Steinbeck’s East of Eden. … Some books make you laugh; some make you cry; some make you think. The Prince of Tides is a rarity: It does all three.” — Detroit Free Press

A modern American classic and a family saga that spans decades, this is the story of the volatile Tom Wingo, his brilliant but troubled twin sister, Savannah, and the complex and damaging family legacy they share. Moving between the sparkling glamour of New York City and the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina low country, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy’s masterwork.

“A big, sprawling saga of a novel…the kind you hole up with and spend some days with and put down feeling you have emerged from a terrible, wonderful spell.” San Francisco Chronicle

“A literary gem . . . The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.” —The Pittsburgh Press

Best listen I’ve ever had

I recently moved to Fripp Island in the Low Country. I heard so much about this book and Pat Conroy, but only had seen the movie. Now that I’ve listened to the book, I’m in awe of everything about this incredible story. The movie was ok, but didn’t even come close to bringing these characters to life in the vivid language that Conroy used to bring the reader into the story. Best book I’ve read (listened to) in years.

Best book I’ve ever read

Psychologically beautiful. Poetically written. Perfection! 15 words not even needed to describe how great it is.

Humbling unexpected delight.

Humbling. Art is the conduit, the magical and surprising key to untapped human emotion and enlightenment of the spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Masterpiece. And I’ve never used that word to describe anything in my life

Let me say this before I forget to acknowledge it…Alan Carlson Should’ve won every award possible the year this audiobook was released because I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job with an actual treasure than this man did. The author, Mr. Pat Conroy had to be just floored by the essence this narrator brought to his story. Carlson WAS Tom Wingo and he left me with that trade feeling that the character he brought to life for us is still out there walking around talking breathing and living his life down in South Carolina. What a performance this man turned in! And let’s face it…what a story!
Personally I’ve gone my whole life being interested in writing my own autobiography someday about the magic of my old city neighborhood growing up riding bikes thru the dirt paths along the banks of the railroad tracks, ringing friends doorbells, and playing street sports. The craziness of my adolescence. The fearlessness, feeling unstoppable, and that every single day was a poker hand dealt to me that I was to play…some days were “shit nothing to do,” but other days were absolutely jaw-dropping in unbelievable fun, mayhem, and blurry memories. But so much fun. And then there was the falling in love the few times I was lucky enough to do that…..THE greatest feeling known to man. Anyhoo…..
I’ve spent the better part of 40yrs writing tidbits about here experiences, reminders, and short essays about how the times and music and friends and love, youth, the summer nights, the cold winter nights with a friend bringing out a tv for us to watch Monday Night Football…..always drinking our faces off.
Ultimately as money of my generation (X) saw, the tsunami of opiates, drugs, and guys that couldn’t stop drinking crashed over us and there’s been few survivors. All this and so so so much in-between! Honestly one of the biggest things holding me back is thatj know im not going to be able to fit ALL of it in!

Well Pat Conroy has done the impossible here! He has written the book I would love to strive for! It was so perfectly edited, written and produced. It was easy reading, totally understandable and relatable. Absolutely nothing was far-fetched and on top of that it was one of THE most beautifully written books Ive ever read. I found myself shaking my head in amazement, hitting down notes, and voice recording myself reading back entries while driving! I cannot say enough about how worth the investment this book is for you. You will never be “lost,” you will be locked in the way we all love as readers, and it’s certainly a book I will never forget.
Thank you so much for giving us this gift Mr. Conroy. Excited to head into my next one. Above all else it’s showed me a sort of blue print that I too can attempt to write my story as well the way I’ve always wanted to. And that’s with everything included…not sitting on the editors floor being clipped out. I needed this story.

Wonderful story, almost poetically written, and beautifully read!

I will most certainly recommend this to others. It has darkness, but always hope shines through.

Visually rich and rewarding

Pat Conroy’s use of the English Language never disappoints! His ability to describe the treasures of South Carolina’s low country or a nighttime view of the skyline of Manhattan and make you feel like you’re right there taking in the view beside the main character it’s amazing. He paints masterpieces with his words.

Some say the performance feels strange when the narrator does the voice of one of the female characters. I didn’t find that distracting. Not at all. Once you’re immersed in the story, each character’s voice has its own unique quality.

I’ll listen to this again.

Maybe the perfect book…

Every. Single. Emotion. The way Conroy captures the “ineffable loyalty” of loving one’s flawed and “fucked up” family is remarkable.
