Publisher's summary

The general public is starting to recognize what parents, teachers, and therapists have known for years: We are losing our young men. Now more than ever, emerging men between 16 and 35 find themselves stuck in limbo between adolescence and adulthood. Addictions, anxieties, egos, and overwhelming expectations leave them trapped in childhood, frustrated with their lives, and feeling forced to cope with drugs, porn, and video games. For too many young men, this vital period has gone from a stage of emergence to a state of emergency.

In The Primal Method, addiction counselor and therapist Gregory Koufacos draws from his extensive background with troubled young men to identify what has gone wrong, why traditional therapy often fails, and how emerging men can break their debilitating cycles. Using vivid examples from his professional career and own life, Koufacos demonstrates the use of the walking cure, Miyagi mentoring, emphatic challenge, and other techniques that harness young men’s primal motivation to live a life of power and purpose.

Thank you for writing this book.

I have been doing youth ministry for 17 years. I cannot tell you how much my heart hurts every time I encounter a young man who is devoid of passion, addicted to substance or porn, and has no purpose in life.
This book gives me hope and encourages the hard hitting way I council and disciple these young men.

Great book for men who feel lost in life

The author in the first couple of chapters explains his method for reaching his young male clients & really explains the issues young men face in contemporary times (lack of a rites of passage, difficulty forming their own identity & connecting with others, etc.). Modern men need mentorship & other men in their lives. Now more than ever before, men are no longer making other men. The author mentions Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid & figures like that are exactly what comes to mind when I think of male mentors (this whole book reminds me of the Magician Jungian archetype honestly).

He explains how men need to go through 4 stages to reach their highest potential: bonding, exploring, engaging & creating. He mentions how you should perceive your life as if it were a Netflix show & ask yourself do you enjoy hearing about or watching your life & when you tell people your job & lifestyle, do they feel engaged?

Overall, this is a great book for young men & especially for men who feel lost in their lives & feel they haven’t lived their lives in a manner that’s in alignment with their core values & beliefs. Highly recommended.
