Publisher's summary

Wayne Castine was found brutally murdered and the murderer remains at large. Castine, a suspected child predator, was killed in Brattleboro where he was involved with a tangled network of an extended family living in a local trailer park. Any member of the clan would have had the opportunity to kill him, and, as he was involved with both the mother and her 12-year-old daughter, reason to commit the murder.

At the same time, Joe Gunther has learned that his girlfriend Lyn Silva's fisherman father and brother, believed lost at sea off the coast of Maine, might have actually been murdered. Without enough solid information to warrant law-enforcement involvement, Lyn returns to Maine to try and investigate Gunther's findings. Gunther periodically puts his ongoing murder investigation on hold - irritating his colleagues and angering his bosses - to go and help Lyn in Maine. It appears increasingly possible that her father and brother weren't the good guys that Lyn always believed them to be and that they might have been involved with vicious smugglers who murdered them - and might do the same to Lyn if she keeps pushing.

Torn between his conscience and his heart, a murder investigation and a personal search for the truth, Gunther finds that betrayal and loyalty are often a matter of viewpoint.

Storyline prevails over poor narration

I’m loving these books, and have fallen in love with Joe Gunther, but I need Tom Taylorson to be the one and only narrator! He IS Joe for me, and I feel like I’m cheating with an imposter with anyone else.

Oh, the narration...

If you want to hear Jim Carrey play the Riddler impersonating Ace Ventura pretending to be a woman pretending to be a man, then listen on. But if you're like me, and you're stuck with 5 books in the middle of your binge narrated by someone other than Tom Taylorson, then consider changing the playback speed to 130. It does make it sound somewhat better, but if nothing else, it makes the book go by faster. As for the story, all my hopes that Lyn will be a compatible and supportive, drama-free mate for Joe seem to be getting dashed against the waves...pun intended. I was really hoping Joe could finally have someone to laugh with.

Can’t bear to listen

Well, I tried and failed to listen to this book.
The narration was so SO terrible that I could hardly follow the story line.
Don’t waste your money on the audio version, buy the book instead.

I can't stand William Dufris's voice

The story was good but William Dufris' performance, I couldn't stand it. Big mistake for using him.

Poor performance

The performance was much less than previous books in the series of Joe Gunther stories.

Awful Narration

This book could have been so good! First one I’ve been so miserably disappointed by the narration. I hope the rest are anyone but him. Yikes.

Narrator Made it Tough

Tom Taylorson is Joe Gunther - his voice and manner are perfect. I'm not sure the reason for a change but this is the second time a new voice has been put to the series and it just doesn't work for me. The story was ok but the narration made it tough for me. I might like it better if Taylorson read it - c'est la vie. May skip the next novel and pick up where Tom returns.

Disappointed.

The narration was terrible. Please don't change narrators after the first 10-15 books! It really ruined it for me.

Narrator is horrible

Narrators character voices just sound like everyone is constipated for the most part. If he just read the story he would be fine, but he cannot do multiple voices.
