Audie Award, Thriller/Suspense, 2016

This program contains two versions of The Patriot Threat - one is the complete unabridged text, and the other is the writer’s cut, which includes Steve Berry’s behind-the-scenes commentary at the ends of some of the chapters. If you’d like to listen to the Patriot Threat WITHOUT Steve Berry’s comments, just play the program from the beginning. To listen to the writer’s cut version of The Patriot Threat WITH Steve Berry’s commentary, start with Download Part 3 or Chapter 74.

In an innovative new approach, Macmillan Audio and Steve Berry have produced an expanded, annotated writer’s cut audiobook edition of The Patriot Threat.

The 16th Amendment to the Constitution legalized federal income tax, but what if there were problems with the 1913 ratification of that amendment? Secrets that call in to question decades of tax collecting. There is a surprising truth to this possibility—a truth wholly entertained by Steve Berry, a top-ten New York Times best-selling writer, in his new thriller, The Patriot Threat.

His protagonist, Cotton Malone, once a member of an elite intelligence division within the Justice Department known as the Magellan Billet, is now retired. But when his former boss, Stephanie Nelle, asks him to track a rogue North Korean who may have acquired some top secret Treasury Department files - the kind that could force the United States to its knees - Malone is vaulted into a harrowing 24-hour chase that begins on the water in Venice and ends in the remote highlands of Croatia.

With appearances by Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, and a curious painting that still hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Steve Berry’s trademark mix of history and suspense is 90 percent fact and 10 percent exciting speculation, a provocative thriller that poses a dangerous question: What if the federal income tax is illegal?

Did not disappoint

Cotton Malone is still one of my favorite characters and Steve Berry's stories and presentation is still on target and fun to listen to. Please bring Cassiopeia back into Cottons life. He's a mess

Very well researched and prepared novel.

Where does The Patriot Threat rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Mr. Berry is such an excellent story teller. The research is so in depth, followed by a terrific presentation that the listener is captivated and compelled to consider the possibilities in real time. Love the Cotton Malone series and will recommend and look forward to next one. Character development is first class.
Scott Brick is, as always, an excellent performer. I always consider any work by him.

Author's Cut Is Great

What a great idea and special treat. Steve Berry gives us a look into his mindset when writing the book. I especially like that he spells out what parts are facts and what is fiction. I hope they continue with the "Authors Cut" program. Scott Brick does a great job as he normally does. He seldom disappoints.

Good story, okay listen

I enjoy the intricate plots in the stories written by Steve Berry and this one did not disappoint. However, I am very tired of listening to Scott Brick's narration. His delivery sounds as if he is bored by the process. That combined with an arrogant and condescending voice makes him very difficult to listen to. I've listened to a number of books, written by a variety of authors, that have been read by Scott Brick and this is my last one. In the future, I will purchase the Kindle edition of any book narrated by Mr. Brick.

A Book About Taxes? Really?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. One of the most boring books I have tried to listen to.

Would you ever listen to anything by Steve Berry again?

Yes. Steve Berry is one of my favorite writers. I've read all his books.

Did The Patriot Threat inspire you to do anything?

Take a nap.

Any additional comments?

Usually, I fire up the app every chance I get to listen to the latest Steve Berry book. But this time I've struggled to listen, waiting for it to get interesting. I'm on Chapter 57 and am still waiting.
