Publisher's summary

He’s an athlete all about focus, discipline, and achieving goals.

She’s the free-spirited girl next door who won’t be tied down to anything but her emotional support Kindle.

But when the cat distribution system brings these two together, opposites attract.

Life has always been family, football, and school.

Focusing on my goals didn’t leave much room for girls. But I’m not in school anymore. I’m the hottest rookie running back the league has ever seen, and I know how to score a touchdown. I don’t have a clue how to score with a girl.

But I’m going to learn. Because the girl next door with all the thick curves is my new goal. And I’m going to win her heart.

She knows nothing about football, but she does like my tight end.

So does her cat.

Her older brother (by two whole minutes) does not, and he’ll do anything to keep us apart.

The next book in the Cocky Kingmans series will have you swooning and wishing you were a part of the Kingman family all over again.

The Rookie and the Wanderer

4.5 stars/5 stars

Amy Award does it again! I love this entire series. Her approach to romance is a sweet, fluffy, and fun one but takes on some serious issues at the same time. I love how all her FMCs are plus sized with self-love but still show some insecurity at the same time.

This book opens with the rookie brother, Hayes, naked in his backyard holding the cat that belongs to the curvy girl next door. So many innuendos abound during their verbal exchange. Willa is the smart mouthed, world traveling, book nerd that has just arrived home at the request of her guncles for an update on a health journey they have been going on.

Amy Award does an excellent job of describing exactly who each character is and how they show up in their worlds including that Willa has an emotional support Kindle – I think many of us can relate to this. Also, shout out to a book that has a chapter title of Twatwaffles!

As Willa and Hayes do a great job of trying to avoid their attraction to each other, they continue to be in each other’s orbit but to the dismay of Willa’s older brother Zander who is a former college football teammate of Hayes’ that has a monster jealous streak over Hayes’ rookie success.

There are some great family dynamic issues that are addressed in this book including sibling rivalry, parent favoritism, and the feeling of being the family disappointment. And the journey that Hayes goes on trying to be more spontaneous and less rigid is great.

We see a repeat of all the Kingman brothers (and significant others) and love how this family (and found family) are coming together. Keep it up Amy Award – I am here for all 8 brothers and princess Jules’ stories!

As Hayes fights to keep Willa in his life, the words that he spoke to Willa to convince her that they will find their way through the mess were gold! “If the last 24 hours have taught me anything, it is that when I am sure we are lost, you find a way. We will find a way to make this work – we can and will be together.” (SWOON) And then when Hayes pulls out the Wizard of Oz references and lays it all out to his family that there is no giving up on Willa and he compares her to the technicolor in his black and white life, he is not going back to Kansas because Willa is his Oz, and that she is his yellow brick road and that he would be lost without her is extra SWOON-y!

I'm always good for some Star Trek nerditude in my jock smut. not that this has been a genre to date.

Given the wide and voluminous popularity of trek-associated romance content that exists, it's a little surprising it's so rare to have a truly nerd level set of references in a relatively mainstream romance, but, well. it is. I'm especially pleased to find this peanut butter in my chocolate in a romance with fat heroines AND smart pro jocks who actually like women. Seriously I didn't know we could do better than a previous series I listened to which had a buff smart fireman who got gooey about kids and kittens, but here we are.

I was initially distressed about the notion of a Klingon salad, but I got over it because I mean, that's some range in the references - ENT crew, bathtub planet, and Killy. I have been laughing at the blue and orange Denver "Mustangs" the whole series, I am so very amused by the football/popstar situation, and now here we are in the land of streaming Trek. Yes please, and I await the next with enthusiasm.

I liked it but...

I liked the story of Willa and Hayes. Where the story went off the rails for me was that Hayes was a virgin and he was pleasing Willa from day one, and at that from only reading a book and watching porn. A man who has never had sex is not going to rock your world and be cocky that he knows how.

Ms. Award has done it again!

I absolutely love the cocky Kingman series, this book is no different! It has a cute and cozy feel with a bit of spice thrown in at all the right moments. TPND has a cinnamon roll, virgin MMC and a sassy plus sized FMC. I adore how the author captured these characters and really developed their story line. I cannot wait until the next one!!! Each one will have you swooning over the Kingman Clan! I was kicking my feet and squealing so many times! I don’t know how Amy Award makes each book better than the last!

The narrator’s are fantastic! They really bring the characters alive! The voices were so suiting to the characters and with Hayes’ dirty mouth… it was …umm… pant… jaw, yeah it was jaw dropping! Absolutely perfect!

It is always the quiet ones..😁😘

I have loved all the books in this series but I believe this is by far my favorite. The unconditional love between Hayes and Willow is what every girl dreams of. It is always the quiet boys that will surprise you behind closed doors. The intimate scenes were extra sexy. I can't wait for Emmett and Pen's story.
