A woman is drawn into a mysterious web of secrets in this twisty whodunnit from New York Times best-selling author Mary Kubica

Sadie and Will Foust have only just moved their family from bustling Chicago to a coastal island in Maine when their neighbor Morgan Baines is found dead in her home. The murder rocks their tiny coastal island, but no one is more shaken than Sadie.

But it’s not just Morgan’s death that has Sadie on edge. And as the eyes of suspicion turn toward the new family in town, Sadie is drawn deeper into the mystery of what really happened that dark and deadly night. But Sadie must be careful, for the more she discovers about Mrs. Baines, the more she begins to realize just how much she has to lose if the truth ever comes to light.

“Altogether unpredictable.” (Karin Slaughter, New York Times best-selling author)

Kind of disappointed

I was so excited for this book, but I’m kind of disappointed. I feel like a lot of time was wasted explaining things that didn’t matter and that the character development wasn’t enough to really get you attached to anyone.

You got it figured out until you don't

This book has you wanting to keep listening and waiting to continue. There comes a point when you figure it out and you are bummed. Who wants to read something you figure out? But did you figure it out? Keep listening because the twist is awesome.

A great thriller!

At first, I thought perhaps it was a bit slow. But, despite that, it held my interest. I think perhaps the end needed that slow beginning to allow a build up of the story. While the language seemed a bit stilted using words that don’t seem to be generally used in today’s relaxed dialogue, I think it added to Sadie’s character and my perception of her. So rather than it being a take away, it added to the story.
I am sad to be done reading it!

Kept me enthralled!

I never take the time to review a book, but this was worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Twists and turns abound. It was cleverly written. Definitely worth a credit.

Predictable

When you figure out the plot early everything else just drones on. I couldn't take her whining. I just didn't care about her.

Saw it Coming

The book was ok, could have used a little better editing, but it kept my interest. I figured out the big “twist” early on, which I seldom do, then just waited to see if I was right. I thought almost all of the characters were jerks, so didn’t sympathize much with them. And the seven year old boy acted and was treated like he was four, so that was annoying. Anyway, it was just ok.

I love Mary Kubica but was disappointed

I am glad this is not my first Kubica book because I would probably not pick up another. Some people will love it, but for me, it was just odd. Read Local Woman Missing instead, Its Mary Kubicia at her best.

Performance

The reader’s voice was annoying. It did not ebb and flow, very monotone. Otherwise, very good book

Gripping story but a predictable ending

I very much enjoy the way the author wrote this novel. You can tell how much research she did in order to create the detailed world the Faust’s live in. However, I did find the outcome predictable a little before halfway through. But it was still a fun ride.
