Acerca de esta escucha

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Opium Wars, then pay attention...

When diplomatic efforts to introduce opium to the Chinese market failed, the British Parliament approved an alternative: war. There were two wars: one from 1839 to 1842, and another from 1856 to 1860. They are collectively known as the Opium Wars.

The British, who were joined by French and supported by the Americans and Russians, clashed with Imperial China, which was ruled by the Qing dynasty. These conflicts are largely forgotten in the Western world, perhaps out of a sense of collective shame. But in China, the Opium Wars are still symbols of national humiliation at the hands of the Western powers.

In The Opium Wars: A Captivating Guide to the First and Second Opium War and Their Impact on the History of the United Kingdom and China, you will discover topics such as:

  • Prelude - The Red Barbarians
  • No Tolerance
  • The First Conflicts
  • Steamships and Guns
  • The End of the First Opium War
  • The Interwar Period
  • Conflict on the Horizon
  • The Conflict Resumes
  • The Advance
  • Burning the Palace and Diplomacy
  • And much, much more!

My husband enjoyed it. He received a lot about the struggles between the English and China over opium. Highly suggested for history buffs.

This book was well written and accurate but never boring. It truly raised my awareness of quing china in the 19th century. An outstanding guide!

Great guide

It provides a very genuine account of what lead to the Opium Wars, the regular "Public-Private Partnership", which is one-sided in that public tax money finances, in many cases, private enterprise, and once established and the money rolls in it goes straight into privateer hands.

Detailed, clear, and evenhanded

A good listen that never stood still for too long and yet is filled with relevant and little known information that I could follow. I can't wait to listen to it again.

great book

Although I have discovered this book quite interesting in parts, I must agree that it is somewhat frustrating on the whole.

A good detailed description

NOT one of Britain's finest moments, shows us up to be affected racists. Referring to anyone involved in history or the current war on drugs. Shows we learn nothing from history.

GREAT BOOK

Exploring a topic that has largely been ignored elsewhere. It was easy to understand apart from the odd original word or phrase, and unlike many history books was never boring or overly developed for the casual user.

entertaining and educational

WHAT US THE MATTER WITH CAPTIVATING HISTORY????
I am amazed that over & over in ALMOST EVERY Captivating History US is so evil in expanding West, yet all other European countries it’s the other cultures fault. So since China didn’t need anything from Europe, it’s China’s fault that the poor British were forced to FORCE BACKWARDS CHINA to take their goods by ADDICTING the entire country with opium ...WHICH CHINA FOUGHT TO PREVENT.

It’s CHINA’s FAULT
