Publisher's summary

A dark shadow has been brought from the West Indies to an English estate....

England, 1790.

Lord Francis and Lady Ottilia Fanshawe are preparing for the birth of their first child. But Lady Fan won't let a little thing like pregnancy get in the way of solving a local mystery.

Their neighbor - Sir Joslin Cadel, who recently returned from a sugar plantation in Barbados - has collapsed and died on his doorstep. And his young ward, Tamasine Roy, claims to have murdered him.

With Tamasine clearly suffering from some kind of mental disorder and the rest of Cadel's household acting suspiciously, it is clear all is not as it seems.

Why did Sir Joslin suddenly return to England? What happened to Tamasine's parents?

Could this seemingly angelic young woman really be a murderess?

Great story / Narration is spotty

Great story in the series and the narrator is quite talented. However, she’s got a “Benedict Cumberbatch can’t say penguin” going on. The protagonist’s name is “Ottilia” but she says A-tillia in all the books. The word and name are “Coffee” but it’s “Cuffy” in this version of reality. Clearly there was no producer reviewing the voice work. Distracting but not fatal. Meh on the production values.

I loved it!

I just discovered these books and have gone through the first three so quickly. I like that these are not gorey but they have enough twists and turns and intrigue to keep me coming back for more. I also appreciate that while the main characters maintain a high moral code, they are absolutely imperfect. I also appreciate that they are not all unbelievably beautiful. So refreshing. I have no doubt I will be listening to every single one of these books!

Intriguing! Great pace

This one was a roller coaster of emotions! I often wondered what was done with people in Tamasin’s condition. The story dealt with many issues of the day in a realistic way.
