About this listen

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was a novelist, short story writer, journalist, and sportsman. The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel published in 1952, the last major work of fiction by Hemingway which was published during his lifetime. It is the story of the old fisherman Santiago who sets out before dawn on an odyssey that takes him far out to sea. He catches a gigantic marlin and suffers tremendous hardship to bring the great fish to land. In 1953, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and it was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway.

Now I finally understand why this book/story is such a classic. The ending is just beautiful. I'm glad I was finally made to read this book.

Heroic and moving

I'm sure I read this in high school and hated it. the first hour or so of the book seemed dull, as I've learned many of my favorite books are. they lul you into the characters monotonous (no spell check) lives before the crucial event occurs. this is where the story begins.

slow start strong finish

An interesting story that I don't remember reading before when I was younger. Well worth it.

Detailed fishing story, heart felt, be patient

Hemingway's late masterpiece holds up, but the avuncular narrator reads it as if it were The Little Engine That Could. I had to stop listening after a chapter so it wouldn't spoil the novel for me.

Enduring work but wrong reader

First time listening to a book written by Ernest Hemingway and loved it. Didn’t care much for the narrator.

Wonderful classic story

It sounded like the narrator was just reading a book out loud while e-nun-ci-a-ting ev-e-ry syl-la-ble. Zero inflections. Zero charisma. Made an already slow story unbearable. Won’t be listening again.

Hemingway is already yawn-worthy - this just made me fall asleep.
