About this listen

Bill Bradley believes that America is at a crossroads, a "teachable moment" in which we are compelled to reevaluate our political system and leadership. With clarity and urgency, Bradley outlines the story we are being told now about who we are and what is possible for our nation. He then offers a new story, including what changes need to be made, and suggests that the party that chooses to embrace this new story will be in power for a generation.

Writing from his own experience in politics and drawing on his knowledge of history, Bradley shows how the Republican Party has built a solid pyramid structure since the 1970s, at the base of which are money, ideas, and media, whereas the Democratic Party's structure is an inverted pyramid, with too much emphasis put on the need for a charismatic leader to hold the pyramid up. Each party, for different reasons, fails to deal with the real issues that now confront America.

The New American Story is an informed and inspiring call to action, and it is addressed not only to the parties and elected leaders but to citizens as well. Bradley proposes things that every American can do to shape our nation's future. With this transformative and eye-opening book, Bill Bradley elevates the level of public discourse to illuminate the danger and the promise of our current American moment.

"Bradley puts forward a tough, plainspoken indictment of the Republicans and a vigorous and substantive Democratic reform program that deserves to be read and debated." (Publishers Weekly)

A near miss

Mr Bradley has some interesting ideas and critiques. The problem comes when he resorts to his own sound bite Bush bashing. It took the book down one star. Had he stuck to expressing where we should go and how to get there it could have been a positive and worthwhile book. As it is, he clouds the direction we should take with old school bashing. He is quick to criticize all Republicans and slow to acknowledge failures of Democrats. I think he has some great ideas that deserve consideration. I also believe it is time for competing ideas to be heard, not shouted down or their proponents demonized. How do we rally the country to do that? I want all the ideas out there to stand and fall on their merits and our leaders to lead and not be led by the polls. That is why I read the book and why others should also.

Outstanding

While long, this book is so well organized and thoroughly researched I never felt overwhelmed by its length. Unlike the other reviewer I don't think B. Bradley spent an overt amount of time bashing Bush. What he did do was give a brilliant overview of the history (3rd section) of the Republican party both good and bad. He talks about the overall politcal process and where it has worked and where it has gone astray from both partys' perspectives. But in the end this book is not about political parties. It is about us, Americans, our future. Having listened to it, I now want a hard copy for my shelves. It is just a great book.
