Publisher's summary

Troy: Of course I fell for a football jock. But Jackson and I are polar opposites. He's popular, confident, and as hot as hell in a tight T-shirt. Me? I'm just a scrawny, awkward nerd. Another point of difference: He's straight.

As if my crush on him isn't bad enough, Jackson is assigned to be my partner on a year-long project, and I have no choice but to spend time with the hottest guy on campus. Bummer. But the attraction is intensifying. We're on a collision course. I shouldn't be leaning in.... I think I'm going to kiss him.

Jackson: Sweet. I got partnered up with the biggest nerd on campus. If I play my cards well, a passing grade is guaranteed. Troy's all shy and awkward; a classic nerd. But there's more to him than he's showing. And it's making me curious.

I want to see him come out of his shell. I know he would be better off if he let his guard down. I want to be his friend, but he thinks I'm just another dumb jock. Except, I see him looking at me the way I could never look at him.

Am I sending the wrong message? Is he falling for me? He's leaning in fast.... He's about to kiss me. And I'm not even ducking.

Contains mature themes.

Disturbing lack of lube, but otherwise cute

Pros: a nice easy read, low angst, likeable characters. I understood why they liked each other. I loved how the small nerdy one was the top/dom, the author does it convincingly. Little bit of vicarious wish fulfillment for me there 😆.

Cons: it mentions condoms, but no lube. Now, I'm no expert on anal, but OUCH. I cringed every time just thinking about it. On the other hand, I guess it could be true to life? People did without lube for millennia (though one hopes they used oil when available). Still, gotta wonder why the author made that choice.

A solid easy listen

I’m new to this author and enjoyed the book overall. Good narration by North, he did very well with the intimate scenes. The downside was that it took quite a while to get to “the good parts” 😉 and I got a little frustrated waiting for those which occurred about halfway through the book if I remember correctly.

Sweet beginning

I’m glad I gambled on this one, because it really was a sweet listen. I like when a romance portrays characters that are flawed but figure out how to grow together.

I also like when the narrator’s voice is age appropriate, and the voices of different characters were distinct and well fitting. I especially liked that this story stayed away from certain MM tropes (I won’t spoil too much) since that made it refreshing and new from the norm. The steamy scenes were also really well portrayed, and again well done in my opinion.

I will be getting Hayden Hall’s next addition about Quinn and other characters introduced in this story! I’m excited!

I loved Troy and Jackson

This story was wonderful. I highly recommend it. Getting to see nerdy Troy get together with Jackson the jock was amazing. And how they changed each other for the better. I especially liked the sex scenes. But it wasn't just sex it showed how much they truly loved each other. I could see them eventually getting married and even having kids of their own. And of course growing old together. I wish I had what they have.

Coming Out

I think what makes this story from others in this trope is that both main characters need to come out in their own ways. Both Troy and Jackson have to be there for the other one. We see them reevaluating everything throughout the story. I was very happy with the conclusion of the story.
I listened to audio version of this story and enjoyed it very much.

I honestly did not expect to love this book as much as I did!! The story was so sweet, and then all the sudden…BAM! Spice! And it was good spice too!! Can’t wait to keep reading in the series! The narrators were amazing!

Enjoyed this power dynamic

There was a lot of background and build-up for this kind of book, and despite the lack of lube (I’m not the only one who had to ignore that) it’s fun and erotic in places, perfectly confused in others, which makes the characters more sympathetic in my mind, anyhow.

There’s something about building in a detailed world in books like these, however.
If you want the various supporting stories to be wallpaper behind the attractive romance / power-exchange / sexual orientation awakening / etc etc — please don’t make it so interesting! I want to know about plot points (no spoilers) which were just dropped. Not even covered in the epilogue. Or apparently the next book.
I was ready for certain things to happen or at least evolve, since they were built up as important, and boom. Book is over. No mention of various things which I suppose were only window-dressing to the author, but which I, sadly, took seriously. Even if I ignore those things just fading away, I still felt the ending was rushed. It’s a nice ending, but I was left thinking that a certain number of words had been reached and that was it, even if it meant things were stopped quickly.

I suppose it’s odd to say an author wrote certain things too well, but it happened. That’s a balance issue, I suppose. It’s still worth a read or a listen, especially if you enjoy a little hint at the start of what could evolve into a great dom/sub/switch dynamic. We get a taste of what the characters may eventually get to do more of, even if that’s in a fictional future we don’t get to hear.

If I didn’t enjoy the writing it wouldn’t bother me that the end was a little abrupt. I had to check to make sure I hadn’t missed a chapter or two.

So much more than the title implies.

Delivers:)

This book delivers on all fronts. The angst was just the right amount and didn’t drag on and onnnnnn (as is the case and, imo, ginormous detractor of enjoyment) like many romances. Very much a delight to consume. I ache for more on audible.

very definitely for the collegiate age group.

A relatively sweet story with appropriate twists and turns. it is ideal for the collegiate edged person who is pining for a real relationship that matches some of their fantasies. A little bit slow at times, but it reached a desirable finish.

Mostly frothy story that occasionally tries to go deep

An inoffensive listen that is part of the milk an idea into a series genre. We meet uber twink Troy, whose lack of situational awareness is laughable. He thinks everyone is fooled into believing he’s straight. With nearly every page turn we find another character who knows he’s gay.

Then we meet uber jock Jackson, ultimately he is the more interesting and likable of the two, but it takes awhile to get there. We’re supposed to believe he’s hot shot football player - who has the ability to go professional, yet he’s been in school for more than four years as he keeps flunking out. We never really see him at practice or a game, he’s just always around the party house or the library. He has a mean, overbearing father and deals with mean, overbearing professors. He also doesn’t let the girls who are into him get close, has a predilection for chocolate croissants, parties with gay boys and doesn’t see that maybe he’s gay too.

The narrator does a solid job. My litmus test is how well can a male narrator voice female characters, there aren’t many, but he does it well. He has to keep a lot of characters separate and navigates them well.

This author leans heavily into filler sex, once it happens, there’s a lot of it, and it’s very detailed. The sex coincides with the personality development of both guys. Jackson becomes thoughtful, looking for answers and willing, actually wanting to grow. Troy mainly panics. One of those paths is interesting, one is tiresome. You choose.

The story runs predictably towards the end, with the exception of one more Jackson moment. Had the author wanted to introduce this deeply left field concept, he might have wanted to add 30 pages to actually flesh it out, or perhaps trimmed the filler sex a bit and develop more story.

Overall it’s a decent list. I’m not interested enough to move forward with the series, but as a one and done, give it a go.
