In 1967, during the time of peace, free love, and hitchhiking, 19-year-old Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen walking home to her apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One month later, her naked body stabbed over 30 times and missing both feet and a forearm was discovered on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of 20-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated.
Over the next two years, five more bodies of female students were uncovered around the area. In the wake of these murders, southeastern Michigan was terrorized by something it had never experienced before: a serial killer. But after multiple failed investigations, a chance sighting finally led to a suspect: an all-American boy studying elementary education at Eastern Michigan University who wasn't all that he seemed.

Being so familiar with Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor and Eastern University and the University of Michigan, the details of where bodies were found and locations of where victims lived or where murdered, was chilling.
I have thought that I was so insecure as a freshman, that if such a clean cut guy would have offered me a ride, I have no doubt I would have been so flattered as to accept. Timing is everything. Good thing I had left campus.
The narrator was good and held my interest.
I do wish the author had used real names. It detracts from the story especially for people who are already familiar with some of them.

The story is pretty good. It did have a little bit of an anti-climatic ending though. I think the author should have explored more suspects and taken us down those paths a bit, even if they lead to a dead-end. I like stories that are told chronologically as the story unfolded in real life. There are always multiple suspects or leads in cases where the perp is a stranger to the victim. I like to be pulled in the wrong direction as the police would be while they investigate.
This book covers the victims and how they went missing, and then it moves to the events leading up to the discovery of a particular suspect. We don’t get any juicy red herrings, or false leads. Life is never this simple. It seems that there was much more investigation going on with these cases that we do not hear about in this version. We only hear about a particular path taken and not all other paths. But, there was a great mystery in this story in determining the identity of the main suspect. This mystery was the best part of the book. There were a few sections where I could visualize the scene and the visuals are still with me after completing the book. This very day, I could take a pencil and sketch up what the author wanted me to visualize. In sum, if you like true crime, you will be satisfied with this book. I fixed the narration with a simple speed adjustment.
Decent Audio book

The book… the book was okay but I felt that it bogged down in several places while describing the early days of DNA analysis. It did so by relying on trial transcripts too much rather than just wrapping it up in a page or two of exposition.
Terror in Ypsilanti was better overall if you’re interested in this case.
One of the greatest things about audiobooks is the ability to look up locations on Google maps, or Google to find out what people looked like in real life.
