About this listen

Gideon Crew, brilliant scientist, master thief, is living on borrowed time. When his mysterious employer, Eli Glinn, gives him an eyebrow-raising mission, he has no reason to refuse. Gideon's task: steal a page from the priceless Book of Kells, now on display in New York City and protected by unbreakable security.

Accomplishing the impossible, Gideon steals the parchment - only to learn that hidden beneath the gorgeously illuminated image is a treasure map dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks. As they ponder the strange map, they realize that the treasure it leads to is no ordinary fortune. It is something far more precious: an amazing discovery that could perhaps even save Gideon's life.

Together with his new partner, Amy, Gideon follows a trail of cryptic clues to an unknown island in a remote corner of the Caribbean Sea. There, off the hostile and desolate Mosquito Coast, the pair realize the extraordinary treasure they are hunting conceals an even greater shock - a revelation so profound that it may benefit the entire human race - if Gideon and Amy can survive.

Can't wait for the next one.

The Gideon Crew books are one of the few that I listen to multiple times. Read one and you will be stuck. Enjoy

Always hooked

I've now finished this entire series encompassing 3 books, this one being the last. In the last 2 books, including this one, the narrator's range of voices made this story come to life. The plot was excellent and always kept me entertained. I'd certainly recommend this whole series to someone who enjoys both fiction and technical details as well as excellently twisted plot lines.

Nice audio book- good action for our road trip

Good book and good narrator - we had a long road trip and the book kept us intrigued with action and mystery.

Fun references to the Odyssey

It’s fun to read and took me back to 6th grade when we read the Odyssey. The narrator wasn’t my favorite. He sounded like an AI robot. But was ok.

fun fun sci-fi

Any additional comments?

Many others who have reviewed this book I think miss the point. This was not meant to be a rewrite of Homer's Odyssey, the book of Kells or anything else...it was meant to be an adventure in fantasy and science fiction with a current setting. I enjoyed the books and the general escape from reality it offered.

This book defines style

This book tells you what kind of reader you are. Not for everyone but definitely for me and maybe you. I am a runner and that audible commercial with the runner listening to books is what got me listening to audible. Books like these helped me LOVE audible

Almost like a B-Minus Si-Fi Movie

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Although I would recommend book one and two, I wouldn't recommend this book 3 unless:
1: The person has not read books one and two.
2: The person just has a long drive.
3: Doesn't care if the authors go off into the deep end of an already unbelievable fantasy.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Once they introduced the monster, they lost me.. I listened to rest of the book hoping that at the end Gideon was just having a reaction to some experimental drug for his terminal condition.

Would you listen to another book narrated by David W. Collins?

David was a good pick for the series.

Was The Lost Island worth the listening time?

Since I listen during my commute it wasn't lost time but I was disappointed.

Any additional comments?

The quasi-plausible aspects of the first two books made me expect the third book would follow suit. Boy was I wrong! The unexpected surprise of a fantasy plot mixed Greek mythology was the reason that I gave the book three stars.

Love the story lines!!

Another great book!! I love how these authors create unique plots but intertwine other historic books or real life events that work so well! The narrator continues to be excellent!

This book should be lost

There's some really good aspects in this book. It starts off looking for a secret and has some really neat planning and theft of a precious book, and well done scenes set on the water with sailing. Some treasure hunting and Gideon has a pretty well written female lead in Amy. There's some great chemistry early between Gideon and Amy. Then it falls off the rails hard when they reach land. Without spoiling the story, there's some big revelations that just made me roll my eyes. Characters fall apart and it's just laughable. This happens just hover halfway through and lasts through the end. That's not to say there aren't some cool and interesting things that happen after the book goes bad. I like some fantasy in my adventure novels, but takes some things to literal and it doesn't work. I'm a fan of Preston and Child and Gideon Crew stories, but this one didn't work.
