About this listen

The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as Pa, Ma, Laura, Mary, Carrie, and little Grace bravely face the hard winter of 1880-81 in their little house in the Dakota Territory. Blizzards cover the little town with snow, cutting off all supplies from the outside. Soon there is almost no food left, so young Almanzo Wilder and a friend make a dangerous trip across the prairie to find some wheat. Finally a joyous Christmas is celebrated in a very unusual way in this most exciting of all the Little House books.

Truly a classic

We all hear about the hardships of life on the frontier, but these books make the experience so relateable.

Drop the violin

I have read the books and love them, could have done without the fiddle playing and awkward singing. Otherwise great.

Great Story and Performance

Even though a story about the same thing happening over and over again (blizzards!) could be boring, this is well written so you feel the struggle the family goes through and enjoy their triumphs as well. Wilder always treads the line between sincerity and treacle, and it is comforting to revisit stories I read when I was younger, with a new perspective. I have lived in Florida my whole life but I have had a few "long winters" in other ways -- I love the simplicity of their perseverance.

Cherry Jones's reading is excellent, and the fact that she sings the tunes in the book really adds to the story.

Highly recommended!

Love the little house books but not the narrator!

I enjoyed the story of this book, but did not like the narrator at all or the songs in her singing voice. Ruined the story for me. I’d love to hear the entire collection of the little house books all in one long audible book, but definitely with another narrator.. or even with more than one narrator.

So much we could learn

Now we would just fight and bicker instead of working together to get through challenges.

Deserves more stars

To learn about the past, and what people actually went through this is history. This is a classic, and deserves no less than five stars. The stories that are told are joyful, sad, and true. You can’t get better than this on storytelling.
