Winner of the Hugo Award for Best Series!

The acclaimed modern science-fiction masterpiece, included on Library Journal's Best SFF of 2016, the Barnes & Nobles Sci-Fi Fantasy Blog Best Books of 2015, the Tor.com Best Books of 2015, Reader’s Choice, as well as nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Kitschie, and the Bailey's Women's Prize.

Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space - and one adventurous young explorer who discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe - in this lighthearted debut space opera from a rising sci-fi star.

Rosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain.

Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy - exactly what Rosemary wants. It’s also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn’t part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary’s got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs - an experience that teaches her about love and trust and that having a family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe.

This sci fi story is unlike any other. It’s attention to detail and fleshed our characters create a world that feels as if you live in it. I’ve deeply connected with every character in this book and will miss them. The fact that Becky Chambers somehow made the soap shopping scene not only interesting but integral to the plot should tell you all you need to know about Becky Chambers superb prowess.

The best Audiobook I’ve ever heard

Great narrator, and a great story. I love these characters, even Corbin. I'm looking forward to the next two in the series.

Feels like Serenity in a way, but with less angst

This was like a good soap opera. You cared about the characters no matter if they were human or alien. It moved along, didn't drag. Looking forward to the second book.

Great space opera

This is a lot more like a space sitcom. Not in a bad way. Its more like a collection of short stories that follow a linear time line. Enjoyable. Characters are a lot of fun and so is the world the author has created.

Not a space opera.

Over developed group of characters in an under cohesive story. I was led to this book as a funny sci-fi story but it was lacking in both aspects.

Story was lacking

I fell in love with just about every character in this book. the world was interesting and we'll described and I never failed to visualize anything they talked about. the highlight of the book is absolutely the characters. I was worried at first I'd get the characters mixed up with all the alien types and their strange names, but every character was so unique and identifiable that just a few words could tell you exactly who was speaking. the narrator did a very good job with this aspect of the story. I especially loved their voices for Sissez and Dr Chef. even without the narrator, however, the characters were very well written and easy to identify. I want to know so much more about these characters and their world. I want to know more about Rosemary's and Sissex's relationship (absolutely the cutest couple in the book). I got this for a long drive and it made the entire trip feel like it flew by. I could not recommend this book more.

a wonderful book

It's the rare delight of stories to realize you've grown and become more by the fortune and privilege of meeting people who can change your world without even having to fully exist in it.

I'd read this before joining Audible and for me it was a no brainer to purchase it here. The narrator's voice is lovely and evokes the emotion's of the story beautifully.
The entire crew of the wayfarer manages to be vastly unique and yet I found each of them not only relatable but by the end someone I genuinely cared for. Even the crabby ass Corbin, maybe especially the crabby ass Corbin.

I've never found another story quite like it.

Great story about high Sci Fi!

My only gripe is that the narrator should know the proper pronunciation of "heretic" given the number of times it appears in the book.

Fantastic

Seems strange to consider something you build as a "living thing", such as AIs. Like a child thinking her barbie doll is actually a living thing. Also, not sure that I would give battle advice like "be afraid" to my crew, something like "push the fear aside" might lead to less panic. Finally, to even consider having sex with other species, like snake lady, is too much like sex with animals...shudder.

What was interesting about the book was the mission of the ship. The crew dealing with the hazards associated with the mission while striving to make travel safer for other vessels.

Liberal Universe

At times, I couldn't stand the Kizzy performance. Otherwise no complaints, and the story itself is awesome.

Small complaint, Big like
