About this listen

Welcome to the real America, a place you call home but don't yet know!

The USA is the world's empire and its actions will influence us all for generations to come.

But who are the Americans, the people who make up America?

Tuvia Tenenbom travels through America to find out. His wanderings take him across regional frontiers, partisan lines, and socioeconomic boundaries in a fearless quest for the flesh-and-blood American. He visits black ghettos and white gated communities, megachurches and Indian reservations. He schmoozes with robbers who teach him the true meaning of love and meets Jews who dedicate day and night to hatred of their brethren. He finagles his way into a prison where skinheads pray, goes to the Senate - where no senator seems to be working - experiments with drugs on American streets, and ponders the deeper meaning of life with rednecks. He mingles with soldiers who teach him how to invade foreign countries and intellectuals who teach him the beautiful nature of Mother Earth, the goodness of man, and the sadism of the Israeli.

The characters he encounters, the adventures he eagerly embraces, and the findings of his journey are always unique and often unexpected.

Hilarious!

Tuvia always brings the laughs out of me. Especially his questions and comments. It reads like a travel guide, except It’s Tuvia asking the questions that make everyone slightly cringe!

real life Borat

Tuvia Tenenbom's words are carefully chosen and he has a superb skill of saying much more about his subject in what he doesn't put down on paper than what he conveys directly. This is not a monologue about his own worldview or opinions. He is an honest journalist who reports what he sees and hears with as much integrity as we could possibly hope for in this world. It's the message that is chilling. That antisemitism and Jew hatred, often for reasons not understood by the bigot, is rampant in the more unexpected and insidious places in our society. This and all his books are important documents that should be read and re-read by all Jews and non-Jews alike.

Another home run by Tenenbom

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It reveals all kinds of truths we normally don't know about America.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, but in the service of truth, I was most shocked by the description of the neighborhoods that first elevated Obama to political office, and how his ascendency has done nothing to improve the lives of his first supporters.

What about Shlomo Zacks’s performance did you like?

It was clear and easy to understand.

If you could give The Lies They Tell a new subtitle, what would it be?

Everything you didn't realize you needed to know about America.

Any additional comments?

This is a book for diversity junkies. It celebrates and accentuates the diversity of America. It’s not about the greatness of America. In that sense, the book is written from a leftist perspective. On the other hand, he excoriates leftists and shows their stupidity and hypocrisy. It also reveals an extensive anti-Semitic sub-culture everywhere you go. Specifically, he shows a strong correlation between those who believe in climate change and being pro-Palestinian.

Good writing but the sound isn't

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I'm enjoying the book but the audible quality of the reading leaves lots to be desired. It sounds like he's reading it in the bathroom.

Any additional comments?

Fix the sound recording. It's annoying.
