About this listen

From New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly, a new thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, July 2017

A new series from Michael Connelly? Sign me up! Renee Ballard works "The Late Show" (i.e., the night shift) and finds it hard to give up "vampire cases" (the ones that need to be worked at night); she knows the investigations will languish for lack of care from the daytime detectives. Connelly fans will delight in the familiar pleasures of his Ballard’s beat: authentic police procedural detail, "ripped from the headlines" intertwined plot lines, and a detective driven as much by personal demons as a hunger for justice. What’s new is a female protagonist, voiced by TV actress Katherine Moennig (pronounced "Mennig" - you may remember her as Jake from The Young Americans.) Fittingly, The Late Show is Moennig’s audiobook debut - listeners are at the start of a series that promises to satisfy for years to come. —Christina, Audible Editor

Great new character, awesome story!

This novel is current, modern and relevant. The characters and the victims are real people which make this story so much more believable. Connelly's attention to detail is amazing and truly gives the reader the feeling that they standing in the room witnessing these events. The story is intense, original and will definitely make not want to stop listening.

Another good one from Connelly!

A new loner female LA detective in this book, which involves two cases. I enjoyed the new characters and as always Connelly' s writing style.

Man or women's voice?

Story was fine, however narration would have been better if performed by a man. At times it was difficult to tell the characters apart and men sounded like women. It detracted from the story.

Pretty Good Story

I enjoyed the story line, but narration was just OK. Appears as though narrator does not have many readings and may not have a lot of experience.

WHAT A SURPRISE!

This is the first time I have read one of the authors stand alone works. The story was excellent and kept me on the edge of my seat. Furthermore, I normally dislike female narrators, but she was perfect and actually enhanced the book.

A Strong New Connelly Character

The book reads like what I imagine a well-written police report would be like. There is character development that wouldn't be in a report, to be sure, but it is presented in the same no-nonsense journalistic (!) manner. The narrator and her delivery are very well suited to the style of the book. I can't help but think of Joe Friday.

There are some mispronounced words in the narration, which should have been caught by the recording engineer or the editor. A good narration deserves better production support. Anything less is unfair to the narrator and the author.
