About this listen
A boy living on Mars unexpectedly becomes a dragon rider in this first book in the sci-fi and fantasy mash-up The Dragonships series, sure to delight fans of Skandar and Eragon.
Keep your eyes down and your feet moving, or this planet will rust you.
That’s what Lunar Jones tells the other kids at the relocation clinic. All of them were born on Mars, a planet that never wanted people in the first place. With resources scarce and hope even scarcer, it’s easy to get distracted looking up. After all, their ancestors descended from the stars.
Martian history always starts with Earth. The first astronauts discovered that space was already occupied. Not by little green men or flying saucers. It was full of dragons. One for every moon, every planet, every star. When humanity discovered that Earth’s dragon had sacrificed herself to make their home planet habitable, they set their sights on Mars. If one dead dragon could breathe life into a world, why not create another one? Mankind won the war that followed, but with one catch. As the dragon died, he whispered a curse over Mars. The first settlers found their crops wouldn’t grow. Animals hunted them. Storms raged endlessly. It took three generations to figure out the truth: Mars was doomed.
Lunar knows all the old stories about dragons and space, but no one up there’s planning to help him or his crew. Instead, he focuses on scrapping valuable gear that the storms uncover in the war zone. Until one day, a salvaging run goes wrong. Desperate to find shelter, Lunar goes underground in a restricted zone. What he finds there, buried in the Martian dust, might just be the only hope left for a dying planet.

Every year since the Ashlords were gifted phoenix horses by their gods, they've raced them. First into battle, then on great hunts, and finally for the pure sport of seeing who rode the fastest. Centuries of blood and fire carved their competition into a more modern spectacle: The Races. Over the course of a multi-day event, elite riders from clashing cultures vie to be crowned champion. But the modern version of the sport requires more than good riding.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Story
Siblings Alex and Zoe Sherlock take their last name as inspiration when choosing a summer job. After all, starting a detective agency has to be better than babysitting (boring), lawn mowing (sweaty), or cleaning out the attic (boring and sweaty). Their friends Lina, an avid bookworm, and Yadi, an aspiring cinematographer, join the enterprise, and Alex and Zoe’s retired reporter grandfather offers up his sweet aquamarine Cadillac convertible and storage unit full of cold cases. The group’s first target is the long-lost treasure supposedly hidden near their hometown Miami.

No one loves musicals more than Riley Morris—her dream is to be a Broadway director. But when the spring show is canceled, Riley has to figure out a way to bring it back. Easier said than done—she’s stuck working at her dad’s game store. The place that means more to him than his family does. Riley can't waste time at a dead-end job when her entire future is resting on making a name for herself. So she convinces her co-worker Nathan Wheeler—the floppy-haired, glasses-wearing guy she barely knows from school—to help her. In exchange, she’ll help him make his gamer-girl crush jealous.

The duke of the powerful House Hauteclare is the first to die. With my dagger in his back. He didn't see it coming. Didn't anticipate the bastard daughter who was supposed to die with her mother—on his order. He should have left us with the rest of the Station's starving, commoner rubbish.

Story
Before the battle of the SandWing queens; before the prophecy and the dragonets sent to save Pyrrhia from endless war; a long, long time ago...evil was born. In alternating chapters this Wings of Fire special edition takes listeners back to the very beginning, when powerful, mythical dragons Clearsight, Fathom, and Darkstalker - the most dangerous dragon of all - were just dragonets. When the future was bright and uncertain, when no one had been betrayed or had their heart broken.

Story
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

Incredible story for everyone in the family
I’m an adult who reads all types of fantasy, and I can confidently say I truly enjoyed The Last Dragon on Mars.
It has a middle grade target audience (and it’s definitely age appropriate) but I also think young adults and adults will love this book too. It has compelling characters with unique bonds and flaws and strengths that all drive a truly imaginative plot forward. The world building is amazing. There are really surprising plot twists and the ending is perfect! Such a refreshing read/listen! Someone start making a tv/film adaptation, please!
I’d recommend this book for any parent looking for a book for their middle grade child. If you are looking for a new book for your child who loved Percy Jackson, then this is definitely the one I would recommend you get them. They will LOVE the familiarity (combined with the fact it has dragons and space and planets!!).
I can’t wait for the second book - Scott Reintgen always delivers fantastic stories so if you’ve read and enjoyed his other stories then consider this another gem.
For all the audiobook listeners out there, Landon Woodson’s performance is exceptional. He does really great character voices and makes the dragons feel so real you can almost see them.
Five stars all around!

A Fresh Daring Adventure
Dragons & Si-Fi?! Who knew these two things could meld together to form such an interesting story?! Well, the author most certainly did :) The Last Dragon on Mars is a pleasantly surprising & entertaining tale of what I hope is one of the best dragon series of the modern age. I read it as a preview for my little sister & absolutely enjoyed it. It’s fast paced storytelling keeps you engaged & ready for what happens next. I can’t wait for the second book 10/10
