About this listen

The fourth installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”

—The New York Times Book Review

It's rarely a quiet day for the Thursday Murder Club.

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out?

And who will be the last devil to die?

“Skulduggery and laughs abound as our favorite gaggle of amateur-detective retirees tackle drug runners, dodgy antique dealers, art forgers and Battenberg cake recipes.”

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”—New York Times Book Review

“So what is it about the Thursday Murder Club books that make them so broadly appealing? The simple answer is that they are really good. The writing is pithy and fresh, so much so that I kept writing down lines from The Last Devil To Die. . . But there’s more than just quotable sentences at work here. Osman’s plots play fair with the reader, carefully placing 'red herrings' to fool the reader into picking the wrong possible murder suspect—a gambit that has improved with each successive book. The endings feel both inevitable and earned: the exact combination one wants in a good mystery. . . Osman’s greatest strength is fusing the puzzle-mastery of Christie and her Golden Age peers with emotional earnestness and wry humor.” —Esquire

A fantastic return to Coopers Chase! Please bring back the narrator from the first books.

I love this quirky group of characters and it’s always fun to revisit Coopers Chase and see what mystery they may be solving now! This book was an emotional reunion with a story that takes many twists and turns.

Another note for audiobook listeners: I still wish the narrator from the first two books in the series would return.

Why all the whispering????

Intriguing story but narrator whispers much of the story! I still love the series though

Why is she WHISPERING?

I love Fiona Shaw! She’s an outstanding performer whom I’ve admired on stage and screen for years. I love her performance of these audiobooks. But WHY IS SHE WHISPERING? And how has no one caught this during the recording process? There are large parts of the book where I have to crank the volume up so I can barely hear the words over the high pitch “s” sounds and the blown out breath sounds on the mic. Why?

This book is the perfect mix between heartbreaking, wholesome and hilarity.
Love it with all my heart, but I think the first narrator was high above the others!

Fiona Shaw is Amazing!

Absolutely loved Fiona Shaw’s narration. She captured each character excellently. Particularly her narration of steven was quietly devastating.

Excellent Mystery and Character Development

Richard Osman has elevated his mystery writing to the level of telling a profound human story in mystery clothing. The reader loves these characters, laughs with them, and cries with them. I highly recommend the entire series.

Does not disappoint!

I’ve been waiting for this book since reading the previous 3, and it was indeed worth the wait! I really really hope there will be a book 5 (and that I’ll be alive and compos mentis enough to read it). I love all the characters and care about what happens to them, I love the laughter (and the tears) that it brings to me, and even though murder and mayhem abound, it lifts my spirits and gives me renewed hope for the human race. And it’s just such unmitigated fun!!! Thank you, Richard Osmond, for brightening my life!
