About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.

1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle’s newspaper - and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada’s most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say - and publish - whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she’s right.

Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh’s same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead - and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada’s problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias’s restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart. Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it’s a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.

Loved it!

Very clean entertaining and fun. There was laughter and sadness, but most of all, the happiness that the good Lord wants us to have in life despite our setbacks. I loved this book.

Not the spiritual depth of Francine's other books

Still, entertaining enough when comparing with other Christian fiction books. This one won't be considered preachy by secular readers, I'm guessing.

The ladies mine

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I fell in love with the characters of course. It ended the way I hoped it would. A very good story and read, and I loved the humor and it made the people seem more realistic.

Inspiring story for women of all ages.

Francine Rivers continues to write stories that mean so much to women of every age group. Inspiring, fast read that touches on so many important topics for women and yet brings it all back to God’s plan. Respect for each person in the story, one role is equal to another and both together compliment each other. Wonderful!

A great story!

I listened while traveling on a long road trip and was hooked almost immediately! When I arrived at my destination, I was listening during any small bits of down time, because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I highly recommend this audio book!

Slow start

I usually love Francine Rivers work. The story was slow getting into it picked up near the end. I recommend it because it has a good message about forgiveness and trust but if this is your first Francine Rivers experience read some of her previous books. She is an amazing writer.

The Lady's Mine

A nice clean story that kept my attention and was very enjoyable. My only qualm was that the narrator was a bit slow in speech. Easily rectified by increasing the speed of playback.

Sweet story, but not a great performance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was sweet, wholesome, and nothing too dramatic or outlandish. I do wish, however, that I had read it myself instead of listening to the audiobook version. The narrator hardly changed inflections or tones while reading, which made it difficult to determine who was speaking during conversations. Also, the male protagonist was supposed to have a mild southern accent which the narrator never showed except for when saying the word “darlin”.
Overall; I recommend this story, just not the audiobook version.
